I love this. Loneliness. Emptiness. Even the house is empty- not even a window. The bleak sky over a bleak landscape.

 

What really draws me to this photo is that there is nothing that should be drawing me to it- yet I can't stop looking at it.

 

I wonder- "Who lived there? Where did they go? Why did they live there in the first place? Were they too sad to stay?"

To paraphrase that old seaferer's prayer, "Oh Lord, have Mercy, the prairie is so wide and my house is so small." This pic manages to be heroic, sad and funny, all at the same time.

 

As a longtime Denver resident, I'm increasingly suspecting that Colorado's freshest and most intriguing landscapes are out east on the Plains, where no one's looking...
