Sunset over Banana Delta Lava flow

vincetylor

When lava began flowing into the ocean for the first time in well over a year on the Big Island this past Summer, it was an opportunity for photographers and visitors alike to experience something quite unique and special. After the one hour trek to this location over broken lava beds (with almost 70lbs of gear) I shot approx 14 or so rolls of Velvia. Most all of the quality images were taken during a very small window of fading light. I did shoot many before and after, but it's right about this time that the real shooting begins. This is the first of a few that I will post taken on this evening. While I was focused intently on the lava ocean entry itself (with telephoto lenses/tripod) and eventually made it down on the beach, the setting of the sun here was also worth taking a few shots at a wider angle. I liked the differing dimensions and colors from this location at this time of evening. The sand and rocks are black. Shot at 28mm. As always your opinions are greatly appreciated. www.hawaiianphotos.net

Excellent shot, esp the composition is top. I don?t know the former version, but the reloaded version seems a bit stressed in the lava tones. Did you shoot some minutes earlier with ND filter ? Here the lighting on the lava has not much contrast, quite difficult to pull out smooth tonal transition under this circumstances. Best regards, Carsten

Terrific capture with nice detail in the dark, lava surface. When I look at this image, I can imaging the heat seaping up from underneath. This is the type of lighting and time of day I had hoped to encounter, alas to no avail. Thank you very much Vincent for sharing them and bringing back my fond memories (Walmart, included . . . sigh.) Mahalo and Aloha. ^_^

Good ole Walmart!

I assume this is very close to where you took your shot Wilson. Perhaps a little further back and to the left. I ended up making down to this spot (Here) eventually. Perhaps was there when you were shooting, because I was planted in that location for two hours.

Great as usual, Vincent - from comp to impact. Questions - Velvia 50 or 100? How were these images scanned? - Chris

Almost always with Velvia 50 Chris, this one included. I will shoot sunsets with 100 at times as well as all wildlife when able to use the 100. For landscapes I have compared side by side carefully and every time the 50 is just plain better. Scanned with the Creo Scitex Eversmart Pro II at 8200 DPI. Aloha.

Very nice work, Vince. You have captured the colors of both the tropical sunrise and the blue-green waters. The overall composition, contrasting the sky and ocean with the dark land, is also very effective. Excellent capture and post-processing.
