Nice abstract. Just two little things which could easily improve your photo. 1) the light diagonals seem to be a little overexposed, I would fix them in Photoshop. 2) The two black shapes in the top left corner make the photo top heavy. I would try to turn the photo upside down so that the most dark (thus most heavy) shapes were at the bottom rather than at the top. What do you think of it? Cheers Ivan

Ivan,

Thanks for the input.

As about the white "stripes", I notice that the bottom bit seem overexposed too, but I think its mainly because of the loss of details (I didnt use very high aperture value), so the closer bit has more details (those darker grains), making the further one look overexposed.

I know it still can be fixed too, but unfortunately my photoshop skill is not that deep yet...

About the black thing, actually in the original picture, the black was in the bottom (if I remember correctly), then I rotated them in all 4 turns, and I prefer this one.

But comes to think of it, when the black one is in the bottom, it looks quite nice too.

Thanks !

Albert.

Albert, let me make a little experiment on you. Don,t worry. It would not be painful. :) Just tell me please, which is the main direction of composition in your photo? In other words which stripes (of what colour) are stronger/more important for you? Tks in advance. (I can explain later why do I put this question, but now I would not like to influence your answer.)

If you mean which part of the picture was the most important one, well, I think when I was composing and retouching the picture, my main attention was paid on the bright blue stripes and the blue squares mainly...

Maybe next to those are the whites and the black ones are the last because its just "black"... :)

Okay, now you can tell me the rest of the story, hehe...

I thought so the blue stripes were more important for you. For me the white stripes are more important, perhaps because they are continious, while the blue stripes are disconnected by the white ones. The consequence: I would like more the orientation in which the white stripes go from the bottom LEFT corner to the up right (that is if your photo were flipped vertically from the original version, instead of being rotated, as you did). For me a main leading line from the bottom left is more pleasing than a line from bottom right. Let me ask what is your native language. Do you write in your native languge from left to right or in any other way? Which stripes were vertical on the original building (in reality) : the white or the blue ones? Thanks for the answers Regards Ivan

Ivan,

Wow... more questions... What's next? my shoe size ? hehe... :)

It's 11pm here, my mind starts to slow down already...

I write from left to right as Im using alphabet, and the "rotated version" is the original point of view of the picture. I remember the building was accross the road on the left hand side of me. ( I took the picture from ground level)

So I guess from this picture we learned that people have different point of view, eh? Because you are more attracted to the continuous white lines and I was more attracted to the blue ones (well maybe it's also because blue is my favourite colour).

It is proven that people who write from left to right begin wiewing pictures - unconciously - also from left to right and from top to bottom.(Except when a photographer does not let them.) This fact has been used conciously by european artists for centuries. For people who write from left to right a leading line from bottom left to the centre of the picture is in most case more natural and pleasing than a line from bottom right. That is why courses for beginner photographers often teach to place a path from bottom left to the center of a landscape as a winner solution. Viewing your original photo and the second version I guessed that you either write from right to left or the blue works on you stronger - for some unknown reason :-). It would be interesting to know the rules of perception of colours and shapes. Let us hope that our conversation will be read by an expert who will shar his or her knowledge with us. Your shoesize? It can be easily induced out of your compositional preferences. The answer is 42! ;-)

Good night. Here (in Europe) it is 02.22 p.m.

Ivan,

Interesting thing you mentioned there, I learned something new today. :)

Yeah, about photography lesson, no I didn't take any lesson... sort of "self-taught" and just experimenting and having fun with the camera...

Actually, when I was thinking on which side I should flip this picture, when I decided my mind on this one, I remember I was sort of started looking from the middle-top of the picture and my eyes looked at those blue stripes in a diagonal direction going down to the bottom right of the picture.

So if the stripes placement is not as what its mentioned theory wise, maybe it's just because I have stronger feeling towards blue, like you said.

Interesting fact though !

Thanks !

Albert.
