johncrosley 1 Posted December 22, 2004 And as such, it probably is overrun in summer by throngs of tourists, with motor scooters, discos, pushing and shoving, drinking, bathing topless on the beaches and upsetting timeless local Greek values. But it's winter and this board is a sure sign of it. At first I thought this white was 'snow' from an Alpine climate, but it's building mortar, and this board, for a Greek, appears to be a sign of winter season. Anyone who ever saw the movie 'Summer Lovers' and fell in love with the perky Daryl Hannah and her French counterpart, understood instantly the attraction of the Greek islands in summer, but lustiness, toplessness, goatskins of retsina and/or ouzo, and beaches full of students and tourists disappear when the weather turns frigid. Then the, money made from the tourist trade and season, the seasonal rentals with their sky-high rents have their windows boarded up for protection, and probably the Greeks settle down to a slower, life with some Greek 'tradition' -- the Jet Set be damned. This boarded window -- while apparently representing a negative (no entry -- no light -- no exit) to viewers -- probably represents for residents a respite, and an opportunity to return to traditional Greek values. In short, here the reality probably is different than the image -- as sometimes happens. John (Crosley) Link to comment

robidooo 0 Posted January 9, 2005 I can understand the shot when reading John's explanation but without it, this is only a photo of a window that is blocked. I find this is not dynamic enough. A wider angle, maybe on the horizontal side, would help to create the story of this photo. Link to comment
