hugh_hill 0 Posted December 21, 2004 I met Martin yesterday at the Oxford street intersection he was standing by the road barriers shouting at the pedestrians 'Blink 50 times in the next thirty seconds!' He told me that he lived in secure shelter accommodation in Edmington just outside the centre of London, it is a place for people with vulnerabilities. Martin, moved down here from Leicester when he was in his early 20's (he's now in his mid 50's)I believe at some point Martin sustained a serious head injury, he was very timid and nervous in his movements yet despite the fact that I was dressed in all my heavy duty woollens he was only wearing trainers, trousers and a skimpy shirt - told me he didn't feel the cold.. 5ft 2ins tall but if measured in gentleness he would be a giant. I hope this image does him justice. Link to comment

kslonaker 0 Posted December 23, 2004 The expression does make this composition stand out. I like the way you have placed him to one side - makes you feel like you are right there and he is staring into your eyes. Link to comment
jory320 0 Posted December 23, 2004 This is probably the best photo accompanied with an interesting story I've seen in a really long time. The warmth and character you described was captured perfectly with this photo. Very good job and congratulations Hugh. Hope to see more of your work in the near future. Best Regards, JS. Guest Guest Posted December 23, 2004 One thing I enjoy most about your pictures is the background that you share with us. Meaning of the whole picture change altogether with the back ground. Great capture and thanks for sharing. Best regards. Link to comment

bradkim 8 Posted December 26, 2004 I like your placement of the subject in the frame ... to the right side. It leaves the space for anybody to come in and stand beside him, holding his shoulder.... Happy Holidays and Very Healthy New Year to you, Hugh.... Link to comment

elly1664876496 0 Posted January 12, 2005 Yes, the expression is wonderful, but I think that this is because of his eyes - bright and full of almost a child-like mischievousness. Maybe that has something to do with his head injury, but then again, sometimes people in that position are spared the day to day worries and trivialities that plague we "normal" folk. The slight hunch of the shoulders and the grin make me think he's keeping an amusing secret - one that he's dying to share but that he's relishing the ownership of. Cheers, Ellen Link to comment

anshikavarma 0 Posted August 22, 2008 the portrait seems to reflect the 'rugged gentleness' of the man perfectly. Of everything, his eyes seem to express a certain mysterious calm about him. Lovely! Link to comment
