Last light over Bali Hai

vincetylor

www.hawaiianphotos.net/Kauaitours.htmwww.hawaiianphotos.net/kauaiphotos.htmThe sun was done and gone and the last rays of lighting were fading away. I used a tripod and cable release to catch the 30 second exposure. I could crop away some of the darkness, but seem to like how it fades away so kept it as is for now. As always your opinions are greatly appreciated, so feel free to let me know if you agree. Many mahalos. www.hawaiianphotos.net

Many thanks for sharing your opinions on this image. I like your description Walter "A romance filled photograph". That is why I think I like it as is even though it is darker than I would normally want. I always appreciate when some of you regulars stop by because you are a little more familiar with my work. All opinions matter, but I seem to put just a bit more attention on those of you that have been by a few times. I do believe cropping some of the darkness on the bottom and even perhaps on the left would still allow the image to succeed while changing its appearance fairly significantly. Nevertheless I do not have anything quite like this in our print line currently, plus the fact that when printing larger I like having as much original as is possible. I think I will just keep it as is, with perhaps a slight increase of density in the darker areas...just a tad. Many mahalos for taking the time to share your thoughts.

Vincent, this is stunning! I love how the silhouetted shapes really contribute to the cloud patterns in the sky. It flows together well. Great capture!

I often look at your work but rarely leave comment. I guess that does show some lack of respect on my part. You obviously make money from your camera and I think the nicest critique is the one with $$$ attached.

To say this is nice may seem silly. I am sure you know it is.

Thanks for posting.

The darkness has helped to frame the photo. I like it uncropped. The colors are beautiful. The movement factor has played out very nicely here. The sea is calm with a 30 second exposure that gives a silky feeling. But the skies are tense and depicting a vibrant motion. In fact the contrast between the motions is remarkable - and furthermore excerbated because of the stillness of the dark portions in the photo.

Heh - funny - I often comment but rarely look at the image - weird ...

'I think I will just keep it as is, with perhaps a slight increase of density in the darker areas...just a tad'

Explain density and what can be done to adjust it - pleaseeee ............ (-;

Density can refer to lighting MR KW. It also also apply to certain individuals, notably myself. Example: "MR. Tylor is somewhat dense"...

I can lighten the darker portions a bit. How? By using the brightness/contrast features in Photoshop, or use the dodge tool, levels etc. Much easier than fixing the *other* example of density...

Many thanks for all of your opinions.

Thank you for the highly involved technical answer - I just spit coffee all over my keyboard .... laughing.

And thank you for enlightening me - it appears that I too have been adjusting the density of my images all along but was too dense to realize that I was adjusting the density .......... sol

I'd crop 16 mm off the left side and I mean exactly 16 mm .... (3/8" to 1/2")

Doing that seems to direct my attention more to where I'd want it ......... in my worthless opinion

Ok - I logged off then couldn't remember if I said crop left or right side - had to log back onnnnnnn - but I was correct - crop the left side ......... sheesh Kensheimers ....... )-;

Ok - well since I logged back on and I'm here anyway (12:40am - work night) - I want to talk to you about re-shooting the little ad portrait of you ....... #1 I'm tired of it so I'm sure half of Hawaii is too .......... #2 it needs some subtle humor - would like to see you holding either a disposable camera - the cheaper looking the better - or one of those old folding Kodaks with the slide out bellows ............ Just trust me - you do the shooting and let me handle the Marketing ......... (-;

< and while we're at it - you need a new shirt - i.e. 'look' ............. let me ponder that and get back to you - just trust me - heh ... >

Thank you Alex for those very kind remarks.

Ken, I am what I am...tank tops and all. Though I do plan to change up on mug shots from time to time. Actually we have approx eight hundred of these flyers left to move before we get something better made. Perhaps you can help us start sending them out. (Not for darts either)...

I hear you on a slight left side crop. But not yet...

Mahalos.

One more vote for leaving the bottom cropped as is. 1) Balance, as you said. 2) You really have two completely different subjects in this wonderful image, since the sea is so soft and blue (um, "duh", I guess), and the dark space around frames it all so well. (7/6) Mahalo back at ye!

I was away in December, didn't see this one... very power image. It's like the beauty is being shot out of a tunnel into the night sky. Very Dramatic, beautiful comp. It's a winner.
