My brother is credited for having taken the original. This is a photo of that photo plus a piece of paper with his handwriting on it. If Mom knew this pic was on the internet she would freak.

I was not impressed. I just get the feeling that this is a bad shot from some party in the seventies. Maybe I am wrong in that case I hope you get better rates from other people. I think it is best to be honest to you.

No need for apologies, I appreciate your honesty. However, this photo was not submitted for critique and in light of that I obviously was not seeking any approval from the "community". This is a place for me to learn about photography and what direction I'd like to take with the art but it's also a place for me to share some photos that are posted for a glance of entertainment, nothing more. I appreciate people noticing the pictures that have not been submitted for critique, I have many of them and have commented on others as well. It's just my reasoning but the only "non critique forum photos" I comment on are the ones that shout out to me with interest, excitement, and the need for praise, as in the need to let the photographer know they're expressing their creativity with skill and should continue to do so. If I stumble upon a picture that is less than appetizing to my eye I either skip by and give the rest of the portfolio a chance or within my comment strive to make the photographer understand what could be done to improve their ability to capture an appealing (to my eyes) photo. What I get from you is a sense of sympathy, and that doesn't help. This is obviously not my best photo and one that certainly does not show my supposed talent, it's just there for fun. Thanks anyway. If you generate the urge to come back and give me an informational critique I will welcome your ideas with open eyes.

ALI---I'm not exactly sure what your comment means. It's indiscernible mainly because of bad grammar, which is understandable, I'm assuming you're learning the English language. I recognise a smidge of quality in your work (I'm being mean) and (even though it was not originally asked for) I invite you back for a comment/critique that might actually help, otherwise a statement such as yours is basically a meaningless waste of my space AND your time.

I think that her hair would make a great place for rubbing balloons , and sticking them on the wall. Then , I would suggest throwing things in her hair.

As far as a photo goes, I think you are on to something.

or perhaps, on something.

"...I comment on are the ones that shout out to me with interest, excitement, and the need for praise..."

This has been debated over and over in the feedback forum. Why give a negative review without leaving tips for improvement? (I can answer that: because it's easy to do). And before the haters step in to ask me, "Well, where are YOUR photos?" I will answer by saying that I won't answer that. Instead, I'll say that many photographers here could benefit their *fellow* photographers by responding in as helpful a manner as some of the 'non-photographers'.

"...If I stumble upon a picture that is less than appetizing to my eye I either skip by and give the rest of the portfolio a chance or within my comment strive to make the photographer understand what could be done to improve their ability to capture an appealing (to my eyes) photo..."

Right. As a non-photographer, I have wondered why so many that do take pictures... don't do that. Sure, I can add my bit; but I am only able to respond from a visual-only perspective that is not based on knowledge of technique. How many times have I seen low ratings from photographers, with no comments? Or comments that do nothing to help the photgrapher improve? Too many. So, I stopped paying attention to rantings along the lines that "non-photographers shouldn't be allowed to rate (and/or) comment". When they step in to help, I'll sit back and soak up the wisdom.

"...it's just there for fun."

Welcome to my world. I use 3D programs such as Vue, Poser, and Bryce. It's just for fun, but the rest of the world seems to want to take it all so very seriously. I have seen more praise and bashing over those 3D images in one day than the rest of the content on my site has gotten in almost 2 years. VERY FEW will give lucid and helpful suggestions. As far as I'm concerned, they can go blow. Tell me something that will help me to improve, or *inserts expletive*.

"ALI---I'm not exactly sure what your comment means...I invite you back for a comment/critique that might actually help..."

< mean >Err... in order for him to be helpful, you would have to be able to understand the comment, no?< /mean >

Just to say... I have browsed your portfolio, and you have some very beautiful and interesting shots! The diversity of styles and settings enhanced the experience all the more. People should take the time to take a gander at your work. I will certainly be back. ;)

Regarding Ali's comment...you're right. My comment, unfortunately, was written in anger and annoyance only because that's my Mom! So I suppose I'm trying to say that my actions were in defense in relation to my instinct towards protecting her face. That's so ludicrous! Now I'm ashamed, but I refuse to delete the image. Let it stand as an account of my inability, at times, to suppress my emotions. Perhaps I should go apologize to the man....

So, now that we're past that, thanks for stopping by. I was unsure about emailing you because my first intention was to ask you to come on over and tell me what you think of some of my stuff, I was (and still am) very interested in your thoughts. I was afraid making that bridge would cause you to think about your comments in a different way than say, if you just happened upon my portfolio. Make sense? I'm conscientous of that but still, as I've said, I like how you perceive and am curious (keep my words from the email in mind if you would) how some of my photos might affect you. That being said, I shall enjoy your return...

Hey, hate to burst everyone's bubble on this one, but I have to admit to being the original photographer of this sorry photo..... I happened to catch my mother at her worst, or so she would say. But she asked for it!!! This photo was not in my brother (Jason Lucas)'s portfolio for any other reason than humor, and for sharing a slice of his own unique family with his photo.net family. The very fact that he could share a pic like this tells you all just what a fun family he has. I can attest that neither he, nor I, would trade our crazy family, mom's fro included, for the world. So suck it up, have a laugh, then go look at some of the truly amazing photos my little brother is capable of producing. I for one am a fan of his work, and wouldn't trade him for anyone else. And by the way, that woman in the photo is one of the most incredible people in the world!!!
