Tropical Oasis (best viewed large)

After my last B&W image, thought I'd get back to a little more color this time around. Taken at Lani Kai beach on Oahu, Hawaii. Your opinions are always appreciated. Many mahalos! www.hawaiianphotos.net

Can't believe I missed this. You just do it over and over and over again. Your consistancy is scarey man. All your images are of such quality.

On a personal note, I wish I was there right now... ahhhhh..

I like them all. I really like Stephen's crop on the last one. I like the tightness of the first shot, and also the depth of the second shot. Great combinations, love the almost cut-out quality.

AESTHETICS IS FINE BUT THE SUBJECT IS TERRIBLY BORING - or you showed it that way. a clische and nothing more such pictures one can find on calendars all over the world but ... here comes a story when Miles Davis was hearing a young jazz PLAYER AND AFTER THE YOUNG LAD FINISHED DAVIS SAID

"Well you played what is in the notes but you should play what is in between them" so this is my comment to this photo

Sometimes "terribly boring" shots are what people want. Large companies put these "terribly boring" shots on calendars and postcards because masses of people will BUY them. In fact I know a quite a few people who'd like to be "terribly bored" in that chair right about now with a Corona. That being the case, I guess this shot succeeds quite nicely, since you have given it a "terribly boring" stamp of approval!! Aloha.

I'd be thrilled to be so 'bored' on that beach, in that chair staring at that incredible scene, feeling the warm sun on my skin and hearing those peaceful waves gently hitting the shore just beyond my feet....

I pretty much spent my 12 years in Hawaii lying, swimming and playing frisbee on Lanikai and Ala Moana Beaches. Lived 5 minutes away in Enchanted Lakes area of Kailua.

"Memories, like the corners of my mind."

Love it!

Thanks for stopping by Bart. Always nice to see you around. I just read in todays Honolulu Advertiser that a man drowned kayaking to the left of these islands yesterday. Water was much rougher than seen here though. Be safe. Aloha.

I thing the vertical one is greater (:

Cutted umbrella like others but you explain that so I have nothing to add. Now superlatives: Exellent colours of see and sky, the composition is just waitn go lie down this chair and enjoy vieweing the ocean! Perfect (:

I can't decide between this shot and the vertical one as my favorite in your "tropical images" folder. To be honest, I'm a bigger fan of the horizontal format but when I look at this shot, I find myself looking up and wishing there was a slight bit more sky included. I was wondering if the chair should be lower and there should be less sand but I don't think that is the answer--I think what I would like for it to be "ideal" would be to zoom out a bit and raise the camera so the foreground stays the same and the sky is increased slightly. BUT, I feel guilty in saying that because I think "Who I am to critique the superstar of Hawaiian photography?!?!" The truth is that if I had taken this shot, exactly how it is, I would retire from shooting because I would know I had reached the pinnacle of my photographic career! But, I know we all need some "food for thought" so I hope that this suggestion (or one on another shot) will trigger a creative thought for you. This shot is great!

Suggestions and opinions are great to hear. ALWAYS! Never hold back.

I worked this one for a very long time since I actually paid for the chair, umbrella and all the other travel necessities while on Oahu. Yes, I could have included more sky, could have given the umbrella more room to breathe (as mentioned above), could have moved the chair further to the right and thrown in grandmas kitchen sink if I had one... but the fact is when getting to the lightbox, you have to choose ONE to master and get printed. This was that one. (Actually this is the horizontal one, I also proofed the vertical, which is altogether different). By stepping back to include more sky, umbrella or whatever else, you begin losing the feeling of being there ON the beach in my opinion. I also remember preferring the extra element of having that slight ripple of a shore-break right in the front. It just added another element altogether, making the image just a bit more lively, a bit brighter and just a little happier.

But trust me, I heard ALL of the suggestions made on this one. They are catalogued! many thanks again to all of you that took the time. This is how we learn. Aloha.
