This is a lot better than the other shot in terms of focusing and I do like the composition with the fence in the foreground and the car exiting the frame with the spray trailing behind. BUT - the person in the left of frame is very distracting. You've got the right idea about how to shoot, but when selecting a trackside vantage point, you must look around you for objects that could creep into the frame unintentionally and spoil a good shot.

Many thanks for your constructive comments. I guess I had the idea that the person & umbrella added a quirky contrast & contradiction to the photo. But on reflection I was taking the focus off the race car - ultimately not a good thing. See my revised crop below. Cheers, Rob

Rob, the revised crop looks much better. :-)

 

I can see what you were trying to achieve with the idea of spectator with the umbrella though - where you could have gotten that to work is if you were shooting the car head on instead if a vantage point were available for you to do that. ;-)
