Little Pigeon Creek at Lake Michigan

davidroossien

drum scan by WCI. I was attracted to the long dark sand pattern on the right. I remember thinking to myself--"it looks like a dragon's tail". As the sun sets, the glow on the sand shelf always attracts my attention. As I began to compose the scene the long lines seemed to align with the distant treeline. I tried to match the left sand shelf proportions with the creek flowing by on the right. Updated processing in CS3 9/2009.

David, your shots of Lake Michigan get better all the time. I really like the perspective and movement here, with all the lines converging toward the horizon. The light has captured the various textures of the wet and dry sand beautifully. I particularly like the scalloped area in the foreground and the strong arc outlined by the sun on the broken sands' edge. This inspires me to be more patient when sitting in the cold at the waterfront waiting for the sunset to be something more than an uneventful dip below the horizon.

Nice landscape. This looks 4x5, but seems a bit soft to be LF and maybe a bit over sharpened. I think your transpierce is good. I'm not sure about your scan. I think the image would be a striking black and white.

Interesting comments. Thanks!

I'm still working on this one. I gave it one pass of USM 1, 100%, 8 for the web. I was tempted not to sharpen it at all. The scan from WCI is beautiful. I can see seagulls that are 300 feet away.

When taking this I liked the line leading from the bottom right toward the bright edge of the sand. I was trying for symmetry in the lines of the bright sand on the left and the flowing water on the right and almost pulled that off.

Me too... I can't get there enough right now. All work and only an occasional shot.

K-Zoo isn't far from the beach. What's keeping you?

Nice. Although I love all your 'red' lake shots, I find the nice blues and mellow, evening red on the sand bank very peaceful. The open space here with the land off to one side enhances that peacefulness.

Thanks Andrew! I think it's tough to shoot a sunset with LF and still use the sky properly. I like to use strong lines with land and sky fitting together, but by the time I get lined up the clouds have moved. Maybe someday I'll be able to afford a Fuji GX680III so I can actually see what I'm shooting through the viewfinder :o)

dave,

this is a great landscape shot. The lighting is awesome. The nice/wierd patterns in the FG is a bonus. Geo

Thanks! The sky is very blue because the sun was very weak almost below the horizon, way to the right and had almost no affect on the brightness sky. Also, the exposure was dead on the money. I used a 3 stop hard angled along the tree line and slightly over the water, setting the blue sky at 0 and the brightest spots on the right at +1/3 to +2/3 at most. I was also very careful with the foreground--using back tilt, compensating, and keeping the wet sand at -1/3. You can get this kind of saturation if you expose properly.

Stunning! I do some large format, mainly B & W, but, because of you and some other guy's color images, I think I'll have to spend some money on a Quickload film holder, damn!

I'm laughing out loud! I spend a lot of time looking at YOUR B/W work with envy. You do such beautiful work!

Thanks for commenting--it helps me understand what people like or dislike about this one.

Hi David! Your composition is excellent, as is the care that you gave the exposure. The effect of the grad is noticeable in the treeline, but I like the way it looks; it adds a mysterious element. You just can't beat LF. WCI does fine work, I've used them myself to make some prints (but I wish they were cheaper). Well...you get what you pay for. Again, Very Good photograph! Regards.

I love the textures and blue hues and the warm toned sand bank. Really nice image. I'll have to make it over to that side of the lake one day.

Joe.
