donsorsa 4 Posted October 27, 2004 Frederic - I like this very much: an excellent image in your very interesting folder of "recent uploads." I'll be in BCN next month after an absence of 15(!) years, and I can only dream (and try) to make photos like yours. Thanks. Don Link to comment

micheleberti 0 Posted October 27, 2004 very nice. what disturb me a bit is the crop of his feeds on the bottom side. Link to comment
andy e 1 Posted October 27, 2004 Having lost plenty of feet in my own photos, I can't take too much issue with the crop. I think people really don't appreciate how difficult it is to make sure everything in just right in a composition when you often have less a second to take the shot. Its excellent work, Frederic. The DOF keeps my primary attention on the old gentleman but allows for the "atmospheric element" of the whole place to be understood, especially through the inclusion of the three guys in the background. Very nicely done. And yes, quite nice to actually see a real and well-done street image amongst the top photos. Too bad more good street photographers, of which there are many on this site, don't get similar notice. Link to comment
donsorsa 4 Posted October 27, 2004 I think PM makes good points. It is nice to see a street shot highly rated, and *maybe* one of the reasons few SP don't appeara here more often is that SP photogs don't ask for ratings as often as colorful nature and macro folks. Street stuff is often posted W/NW in a forum. FWIW Link to comment
fredericpascual 0 Posted October 27, 2004 POGUE...DON.... DON..first of all,.,,maybe coz my low english level,,,I don t get some words from you: SP...PS...FWIW..???... never mind...let me say about this shot...I first see the scene. In this place, not every body likes I shot,..even if it s a place I use to go,,and people knows me very well. I prepared my shot with a hand photometer. I bougt it from Luis Arguelles,,,thanks to him. Then, I set up the DOF...by eye...estimating the distance. Then,,it's a 1 seconde shot. Just the time to put up the Leica to my eye ...made my "feeling composition" ...and shot. Maybe an half second..no more... I wanted to be discret.... I shoted from the bar,,,drinking a beer,,,,I don t remenber. Thanks for your words. You explained what I didn't know to explain.....I didn t request for Critic...so...I....WE...can be proud about this kind of shot is appreciate,,,,,without powerfull color.... Frederic... donsorsa 4 Posted October 27, 2004 I apologize for the abbreviations. Using these abbreviations is a bad habit that I will stop as of now. SP = street photography FWIW = for what it's worth More important, thanks for explaining how and where you created this shot, and thanks for sharing your photography. Don Link to comment

andy e 1 Posted October 28, 2004 Don, I think you're partly right about the ratings issue, but I also think there's a fundamental problem with how many people on PN approach the genre. I believe many street photographers on here don't solicit critiques and ratings because many of the critiques that they get (along with very mediocre ratings) betray a fundamental lack of understanding of street by the people who make them. I gave up soliciting critiques after months of listening to absolutely banal statements about the rule of thirds or "too chaotic" and the like. Often the little exposure people have to street work is isolated to the two or three images of Cartier-Bresson that they've seen in passing. Thus, if the style of the street photographer doesn't conform to the Cartier-Bresson model, it doesn't work. Personally, I'm far more influenced by artists such as Garry Winogrand and Robert Frank, whose approach is of an entirely different kind to that of Cartier-Bresson. Street challenges the viewer to look carefully and to perceive things that aren't the stock in trade of your typical flower shot or landscape. Thus, I think the lazy mind dismisses it as poor or sloppy because he or she won't take the time to try and really see it. Just my view of things. Still no question, Frederic, this is an excellent image by any measure. Link to comment

donsorsa 4 Posted November 2, 2004 Pogue convinced me he understands PN raters better than I do (did). Personally, I can spend all day looking at photos by Frederic and the other great Barcelona street photos who submit work here. Don Link to comment
