Portrait of an Artist (black&white)

advancedphoto

Photographed at f2.8 for minimum depth of field. A medium Photoflex Octodome was at camera left powered by a Balcar PSU4 1600 WS head at lowest power. A reflector was placed on the right of the subject to fill the shadows. Converted to B/W in Photoshop.

The highest compliment one can get is praise from a respected peer. You have been on my favorites list for quite some time.

The 10d is a very fun tool. I went into digital kicking and screaming out of necessity. Having learned some of the quirks I am now quite pleased at what can be created digitaly. Although, I do miss relaxing in the darkroom (building a new one now).

VERY classy informal feel. the tones are terrific, and you've dealt with the glare of the glasses without creating an artificial look.

This was one of those click. One shot was all you get moments. Mark is hard to get to sit still so I really only had a chance to fire the shutter once. The softbox happened to be postioned just right for the glasses.

rev brent, what kind of lighting set up did you use? i have only a canon 420ex with a portable softbox, etc.; i'm interested in supplementing if it makes sense so wondering what kind of stuff you used for this, how portable it is, etc., since you referred to a softbox.

The outfit used for this photo is "portable" in that it fits in a large case and can be taken on location. It consists of a 1600 watt second Balcar monoblock and a 5 foot Photoflex Octodome, the reflector is a 4x7 foot California Sunbounce with soft gold fabric. I use this rig primarily for studio work. Metering for the strobe system is done with either a Gossen Luna Pro F or a Sekonic L-328.

For location work I usually use a 420 or 550 speedlight with a 2' off camera cord and mount it on a Stroboframe bracket and a nifty little diffuser cube over the flash (i'll look up the name at work and post that later), this works fine and unless you plan to shoot product photography your set up should be fine.
