This was taken just before sunset while I was in chest deep water trying to keep from droping my camera in the water. It was very cold water temp. around 70ºF. The kids were freezing and it was very hard to get them all at the same depth in the water.

This is a very creative shot. It seems serious yet fun at the same time. DOF, lighting, composition, tonal range are all spot on. My only suggestion, which would require reshooting is this: I think the shot would improve slighlty if the two heads on the right matched the "depth" of the left most head. See how the boy on the lefts nostrils are almost in the water? To me, this looks better than the other two. This is a minor nit of course, and perhaps being too anal, but a thought nonetheless. Great image, thanks.

There is an unmistakably uncanny tension between the three children. I feel like the girl should be in the middle, but that would be a little more conventional so I like that she isn't. I think that something is expressed in this photograph that has mass appeal. Good work.

This is a killer shot. In regard to the "nostrils" comment by Todd, I also noticed it but in the end decided that the sort of staircase effect of the three heads/noses as presented looks even better.

Just a suggestion: try cropping away the top river bank. My reason for suggesting this is that the eyes are such a powerful feature, but I tend to be distracted away from the eyes to look at the riverbank background. On my computer screen, I used a piece of paper to crop away the riverbank, and found I could spend quite some time looking at the eyes without being distracted by other compositional elements. Also, either in the darkroom or in Photoshop, what about burning/darkening the riverwater in front of the children. Altogether, I thought it was a great shot.

Top quality. Everything has already been said. Sally Mann is wonderful, but she doesn't own child photography and this photo proves it. 7/7
