What do you think of this shot taken with a digital camera? The moon

is hidden behind the clouds.

Thank you,

Anton Dan

I like the dramatic mood, looks very menacing. I wonder what that shot would look like at different ISOs, and different aperture settings. Makes me wish I had a digital. Take care,

Hello Rajasekhar,

First of all I'd like to thank you for your appreciation.

To tell you the truth, I did not consider this shot a very good one and I was surprised at its success.

It's rather difficult to answer your question.

This shot was taken with a very high-resolution digital camera and it suffered heavy digital postprocesing. I cropped the original picture, and threw away more then half of it. I modified the contrast, in order to increase the dramatic effect, and I slightly modified the colors.

I suppose you can do the same with a film picture after scanning it.

I wish you good luck in your attempt to shoot the moonlight. Interesting photographs can be done at moonlight.

Anton, a lots of details are lost when you blow it to a larger size, probably because it was cropped so heavily. But apart from this, what makes the photo so impressive is that many of us tried this shot - and failed. The Moon is too bright and the clouds, too dark usually. Letting the Moon be masked by the clouds was a good idea to solve the problem and it creates a dramatic effect. Good work.

Thanks for your kind comments.

I did not blow the image, Philippe; on the contrary I had to reduce its size. As I mentioned earlier, the shot was taken with a very high resolution digital camera (5.2 megapixel) which for night photos has a higher digital noise. That's why the picture seems to have lost some detail. Besides I used the full zoom of the camera (200mm equivalent focal distance) in order to avoid the lights of the city below which also leads to loss of resolution for night shots if the focus is not perfect (and it wasn't).

Must be fate I came across this photo. Last night was halloween and full moon too. It got me thinking about trying another moon shot (all previous attempts failed). As Phillipe points out the dynamic range of contrast really makes it tricky. I will be watching for clouds to veil the moon just as your shot. Thanks for the inspiration!

ps Some loss of detail must surely be due to the movement of cloud on a 4s exposure?
