I had been photographing flies, wasps, hornets, etc. that are attracted to fruit that falls from trees on my property when I noticed a really tiny little fly (about 1mm wide by 3-4mm long). When I got the fly in my camara's viewfinder, I was delighted to see that it was a colorful fellow with the most interesting banded eyes. I don't know the species, but I am thinking it is in the Drosophilidae family.

Thanx to all for the kind feedback on this image.

Allon, you did find the brother. I have a shot with the same posture of "hand" in the air.

After doing some more research, I am told that the bug is a species of Physiphora - family Otitidae.

I see here dear Mark that you are using Canon 350D with Canon EF 100mm f2.8 MACRO!

Ok.. have to buy that macro for my drops :)

Biliana, I believe the canon 100mm macro to be the most versatile of the macro lenses that canon makes. It is a great lens.

Mark ~ Outstanding photo and very well excecuted!

It would seem that you lost much DOF using the 500D. How close were you (if you can remember), lens to fly?

Beautiful picture. Just wondering if this could be some interspecies hybrid with a mutated drosophila. How big is it?
