What i am asking is why in the picture above, the shadow of the big rock DOES NOT affect that (silt?) flow. Its that simple.

I think you have a confusion between SHADOW and REFLECTION, and remember that the two ain't have to coincide in most of the situations. In your attached crop (also attached by me) what you are seeing is a REFLECTION, that only is produced in the water, not the sand. In your first attachment, remember that the little rock has an sloping edge that produces an also sloping shadow. I think this is a natural scene with the master use of a ND filter.

Dave, this is a pretty good Haystack Rock--it's about 20 miles from my house, so I've seen a lot of these. Nice shot.

this is beautiful. the colors r stunning & light is really mystical. i have no idea about certain comments concerning direction of light & shadow of the rock cut & foreground light being sharper than ....etc etc, but its perfectly natural phenomenon in my opinion. so many times like this i've seen it happening where so part of the backlit/ sunset water resoir appears like this...there's a sandy part [ a huge one ] & naturally reflections act like this there. its a marvellous shot all in all & there shouldn't b any confusion about that. regards.

I have to agree with Brett about the shadow/reflection - it looks natural to me. It looks like the sky has a gaussian blur applied, but it looks great!

This looks great Dave. I only have minor a few suggestions: in addition to the minimal trim from the bottom and maybe a whisker more separation between the peak reflection and the rock in the pool, perhaps a little more brightness/saturation in the blue parts of the sky to compliment the golden sunset tones is worth a try. I'm amused to see this photogenic location is called Canon Beach.

"Note its brightness on the left out of the shadow of the rock...". IT IS NOT A SHADOW!!!!. Again I tell you: you are confused. What you are calling a shadow IS A REFLECTION of the big rock in the water puddle. The reflection CAN'T cross over the "silt bar" as you figured in the crop. The shadow over the "silt bar" must come directly from the sun and it is a position where it is impossible (too low). It hardly make a shadow from the little rock in the middle of the water puddle. At the left of the sun's position everything is in shadow. Take a new look and you'll understand what I'm talking about.

You may be absolutly right. Thanks for pointing that out, i was expecting that was a shadow and it could well be a reflection of the rock..ok.

 

The scale of this is quite decieving until you brighten behind that rock, there IS shadow there. The way the rays are diffusing at the edge of the big rock could well be lighting up the left side mid.....am still bothered by this lower right shadow/sun line being angled inward...perhaps thats not that small rocks shadow at all, could be the rays bouncing off the pool or rock top making a glow effect...is a wonderful image no doubt....gave it a 7/7

I particularly like the way the light is picking out the ripples of sand and the reflection shows the motionless water.

This is a great image; nice composition combined with a perfect exposure. If I where to change anything, I would like to include more of the curving shoreline along the left. Still a Very good photograph. Regards.
