Big Brother's Handrail at London City Hall

This is first ever rated architectual photo from me 7/7,I know I am not right,but simply I could not help myself,It is not my part of the photography,I simply pass architecture,as I pass still life,but you and Ken Williams (still life) simply are teaching me to take care about such photos,thank you once again...

Saw this view on an 02 mobile phone advert recently and wanted to take a similar pic but havent had the chance. Excellent shot, I must visit there at dusk to get something similar.

This handrail seems very appreciated by photographers. I have already see it in another photo.net member portfolio. The building is curious too. I do not like very well the modern architecture, and this is not this one which will makes me love it. (But your photo is good).

Well spotted; no wonder every photographer takes a picture there. The beautiful thing is that it initially looks like you shot through a fish-eye, but of course it is merely the peculiar architecture.

 

The abundances of curves immediately makes me think of Van Gogh's "Starry Night". I would like to see this as a painting in that style. One is tempted to emulate it in Photoshop...

Mark, Paul, Phillip, The handrail feature is so striking that it is an obvious place to take a shot from. Getting the lighting right is a bit tricky though as otherwise the glass looks flat and featureless.

Jayme, the whole place is a bit surreal with some strange-but-quite-fun sculptures (one is just visible poking up from beind the rail) so having an external frame of reference like the building in the background helps to keep oriented.

Lisa, I took a number of shots here and all but this one have people in but for various reasons, mostly flare, I used this shot.

 

Henri, Joe, Emre, I think there is good and bad modern architecture and I quite like this one for its originality and for the way the surroundings are handled. Some modern architecture is truly horrible and Boston City Hall seems to be one where the architects have gone out of there way to make it as ugly and 'big brother' like as possible. I wondered here whether the architect was having a sly dig at politicians by having a normal sized handrail and a HUGE REALLY INPORTANT one! (It is about a foot in diameter!) Hence my title.

A lesson in composition, Colin and a very good use of an spectacular sky.

I am today in Felixtowe visiting my daughter and my recently born grand daughter and look forward to an opening in the dark skies that loom over here. If that's the case I might ger interesting shots of the container docks...

The container terminal at Felixstowe is an interesting place but I have never managed to get close enough to take any good shots. This looks like a day for an ND grad to make something of the gloomy sky. Or forget the docks and take some nice shots of the new arrival. How long are you in UK for?

You seem to visit places on perfect days, Colin - where you have clouds in the sky and good lighting. I like the curves in this one, too. I think the big rail is for artistic/design value and the smaller one is for functionality.

Kim, I'm sure you're right about the rails - and it was raining about half an hour after I took this!

colin, this is obviously a giant trump, like one of those the tibetan buddhist priests use on a single note during hours !

go back there with a tin can opener, pierce a hole and "pooh," then you will hear.

beware not to blow too strong, though, or else, the city hall might take off.

Looks more like Dali than van Gogh, superb choice of perspective. First thought was "fisheye lens" when I saw the thumbnail. Great architectural shot. Congrats, Carsten
