darko1 0 Posted October 14, 2004 This is first ever rated architectual photo from me 7/7,I know I am not right, but simply I could not help myself,It is not my part of the photography,I simply pass architecture,as I pass still life, but you and Ken Williams (still life) simply are teaching me to take care about such photos, thank you once again... --darko Link to comment

rulon 0 Posted October 15, 2004 Absolutely superb composition Colin. An informative shot from an architectural stand point. The use of the handrail as an element of presentation is outstanding. Amazing balance. Thanks. Link to comment
jayme 0 Posted October 15, 2004 You gotta love anything with this perspective shape. I like the fact that the building in the backround is perspectively correct. Neat shot! Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted October 15, 2004 Saw this view on an 02 mobile phone advert recently and wanted to take a similar pic but havent had the chance. Excellent shot, I must visit there at dusk to get something similar. Link to comment

henrimanguy 0 Posted October 15, 2004 This handrail seems very appreciated by photographers. I have already see it in another photo.net member portfolio. The building is curious too. I do not like very well the modern architecture, and this is not this one which will makes me love it. (But your photo is good). Link to comment
joe_formosa 0 Posted October 15, 2004 i am an architect by profession, photographer as a hobby ..... this picture is superb from both aspects Link to comment
lisa_lee1 0 Posted October 16, 2004 Very compelling, I would only suggest people as an addition to an already stunning image to enhance. Cheers--- Link to comment
emre 0 Posted October 16, 2004 Well spotted; no wonder every photographer takes a picture there. The beautiful thing is that it initially looks like you shot through a fish-eye, but of course it is merely the peculiar architecture. The abundances of curves immediately makes me think of Van Gogh's "Starry Night". I would like to see this as a painting in that style. One is tempted to emulate it in Photoshop... It is strange that you associate this with Big Brother. As a male, I associate curves with all that is beautiful. No sir, the actual Ministry of Truth, deceptively renamed the City Hall, is actually located in Boston: http://www.bc.edu/bc_org/avp/cas/fnart/fa267/20th/boscity1.jpg Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted October 16, 2004 Mark, Paul, Phillip, The handrail feature is so striking that it is an obvious place to take a shot from. Getting the lighting right is a bit tricky though as otherwise the glass looks flat and featureless. Amar, hi! Good to see you again! Jayme, the whole place is a bit surreal with some strange-but-quite-fun sculptures (one is just visible poking up from beind the rail) so having an external frame of reference like the building in the background helps to keep oriented. Prevor, Angel Luis, Manolis - hi! and thanks for stopping by. Lisa, I took a number of shots here and all but this one have people in but for various reasons, mostly flare, I used this shot. Henri, Joe, Emre, I think there is good and bad modern architecture and I quite like this one for its originality and for the way the surroundings are handled. Some modern architecture is truly horrible and Boston City Hall seems to be one where the architects have gone out of there way to make it as ugly and 'big brother' like as possible. I wondered here whether the architect was having a sly dig at politicians by having a normal sized handrail and a HUGE REALLY INPORTANT one! (It is about a foot in diameter!) Hence my title. alberto.conde 0 Posted October 16, 2004 A lesson in composition, Colin and a very good use of an spectacular sky. I am today in Felixtowe visiting my daughter and my recently born grand daughter and look forward to an opening in the dark skies that loom over here. If that's the case I might ger interesting shots of the container docks... Regards! Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted October 16, 2004 Alberto! in Felixstowe? not that far away. (I'm in London). I hope your daughter and grand daughter are well. The container terminal at Felixstowe is an interesting place but I have never managed to get close enough to take any good shots. This looks like a day for an ND grad to make something of the gloomy sky. Or forget the docks and take some nice shots of the new arrival. How long are you in UK for? Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted October 16, 2004 You seem to visit places on perfect days, Colin - where you have clouds in the sky and good lighting. I like the curves in this one, too. I think the big rail is for artistic/design value and the smaller one is for functionality. Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted October 16, 2004 Kim, I'm sure you're right about the rails - and it was raining about half an hour after I took this! Link to comment
behel 0 Posted October 17, 2004 colin, this is obviously a giant trump, like one of those the tibetan buddhist priests use on a single note during hours ! go back there with a tin can opener, pierce a hole and "pooh," then you will hear. beware not to blow too strong, though, or else, the city hall might take off. colin carron 58,916 Posted October 17, 2004 Of course! - for politicians to 'blow their own trumpets' as the English saying goes. By the way, Kim is no gentleman! (:-)) Link to comment
carsten_ranke 0 Posted October 17, 2004 Looks more like Dali than van Gogh, superb choice of perspective. First thought was "fisheye lens" when I saw the thumbnail. Great architectural shot. Congrats, Carsten Link to comment
gaetanchevalier 5 Posted October 17, 2004 The composotion is superb giving a nice perspective effect. Great work. Link to comment
mike werkhoven 0 Posted October 17, 2004 Strong winds overthere? Besides that, very dynamic point of view, nearly a bit surrealistic. Link to comment
