I live in Perth, WA and if it's any help I have heard them called flame trees - although that doen't sound very botanical!

Many thanks, this was sufficient info to do a search on the Internet. It turns out to be a Brachychiton acerifolium, which was almost more than I wanted to know ;-)

 

More importantly, it made made me change the titel of the photo!

I haven't ever seen trees like this - even with fall foliage, the deep red of the leaves is very striking. Well seen, better composed.

Eric - many thanks for your comment. As it happens, I am currently in San Diego, and yesterday I saw these trees in bloom right here in front of the convention centre!
