Castle point Lighthouse

ian cameron

Castle point lighthouse is a wonderful place the slender structure of the lighthouse shines like an unlit beacon at one end of a narrow spit of curving coastline and is bounded by a sandstone rock slab at the other end of the bay. During the first flickering golden rays of dawn sunshine the oblique light paints the sandstone orange and the sky loses earth shadow and changes from pink/magenta to burnt orange. I was so pleased to witness it, capturing it on film was a bonus. Please visit my website. and some superb images at have a look at Timecatcher too.

Try to imagine the top of the lighthouse being wholly within the

frame this is an artefact of my Nikon scanner, the slide matches it

for colour and saturation but benefits by including ALL the

lighthouse.

Wonderful light and color! Maybe just a tad more lighthouse and is it leaning to my left a few millimeter?

"Two suns" initially I was mystified by the comment. I assume Diadato that you believe some digital jiggery pokery has been going on (if that is not your meaning, I apologise). I can only guess you are referring to the pinkish glow in the sky directly opposite the sunrise. It is a quite natural phenomena. The rising sun, just prior/after to sunrise/sunset, bends light around the earth, filtering it through dust, debris and water vapour. The light is forced into the red end of the spectrum and stains the sky directly opposite the sun a reddish hue. This can be so bright that the earths shadow (deep blue) is projected onto it and that shadow will rise or fall from the pink glow depending on whether or not it is sunset or sunrise. My explanation may not be spot on but that is the gist of it. Hopefully other highly accomplished landscape workers who work at the extreme ends of the day will confirm this. NOT two suns, ONE. I confine my digital work to levels, curves and sharpening.

Beautiful shot. Just curious...did you also get a vertical format of this scene? I feel a vertical shot covering just the left half of this scene may provide a good perspective of the light house.

Very beautiful motif, intriguing the contrast of warm and cold colors with the white lighthouse. Slight slant, as Jayme already said, minor issue.

Absolutely superb shot! Wonderful light and colors, great composition and all... Your slide on a light table must be something to look at! I like the eye guidance too. I do think the slant is just an illusion created by the color differences and the hardly visible shoreline in the background. Technically perfect to me! 7/7!
