I like very much the scene, but I would crop more of the left side to focus more on their facial expression! I like their posture, but the woman is out of focus. But overall good documentary photograph dear Simon!

the negative space behind the figures serving a useful purpose.... that is to emphasise the 'alien' environment, their lack of comfort, turning away from it seems to have significance...

that were my thoughts

Simon, do not crop the left side, I like it as it is, also you consider this documentary, that is why we need to see the way they live (if not, it would be a portrait). As commented a little bit sharpening would be better. Nice shot.

thanks for your comment, i just wanted to leave the pic (and the sharpness as it is) as the tad of unsharpness, resulting from an higher iso leaves the atmosphere as i found it....

Beautiful light falling on two faces. I really like the way they're so close together and yet you can completely see both faces.

There are a few problems, though, with the composition here (IMHO). First, it would have been nice to have had the subjects looking toward the middle of the frame. You know, the eyes of a subject direct our own eyes. And in this case, the eyes send us wandering off into the margin. If this were my photo, I'd be tempted to fix the problem by cropping out the whole left half.

Also, there's some unpleasant grain in the shadows here, but I'm sure that's a scanner thing. It's a problem with which I battle constantly.

thanks for your critique. this was a so called snapshot, that means i didn t make them pose for me. let me explain my intention about not cropping the left area and the glances to the right: this was taken inside an "apartment" in the biggest township of capetown. i think i don t have to explain the lack of comfort you find there. the empty space is my metapher for the poverty and turning away from poorness makes sense, doesn t it... the intimacy of mother and child is the very nice contrast to the scenary. the mentioned grain is caused by an higher iso setting, as i never use a flash. best regards

Nicely because is dramatic and tender photo, in the artistic way is magnific but not at all about exposition. Your photo could be marvellous if the wall should have texture and the shadows of persons could reflect it siluet more on the wall and their faces should have a little more light.
