I know ... the rose isn't sharp enough. Gotta be fixed. My question for you on this one is about the tones. Too much yellow? I wanted to go for a more brassy color, while still keeping with the sensation of sepia. Of all of the French horn shots, I like the tones in the very first one the best.

Color rose works better I think. To remove unwanted reflection from glossy surfaces such as brass instruments, I want to recommend a good book "Light Science and Magic: by Fil Hunter and Paul Fuqua". There might be a trumpet photo taken with tenting light. Check it out. The book is also discussed on PN.

If you are interest in tenting light for your french horn, I can send you a jpg file that shows the setup.

Lou Ann, good lighting and sound composition. The toning is nice too. Agree that rose (with stem & leaves) is probably best in color. Nice variation. ^_^

Lou Ann please .......... you need to send out some kind of email notice when you change your bio picture - with all due respect - Wasn't expecting that and it jolted me straight up in my chair ........... sol ...........

Is this shot full frame ? - did you leave yourself some cropping options ? ................ And what were you wearing ?

Sorry to startle you, Ken! :-) I might change the portrait again soon ... not real happy with that one. It's amusing, though, when I decide I need a new pic because I get my tripod all set up and run back and forth from the camera to the place I've chosen to stand ... I'm sure if anyone were to be watching me, they'd think it was hilarious! :-) I needed the new pictures because I had an old one (long hair) on my work website and didn't want to scare the kiddos, who can't handle simple things like teachers who grow or cut their hair in significantly different lengths/styles. You can see the color version of the same portrait at that work website.

Okay ... back to the image at hand ... I'm ashamed to show the color/original version. I used whatever I could find for a backdrop, knowing I was going to change it back to B&W/sepia. This is an old tablecloth (I would never use pink on the table anymore!) Anyway ... lots of cropping options. What were you thinking?

Yes I would keep the red rose but also drop out more of the background until there is just a suggestion of a shadow around the horn.

Kudos to you to show us your set up, I daresay if we could see behind the scenes of some of the top photos, we wouldn't believe it. I admire your willingness to constantly learn all you can. That has always impressed me... ever since my first comments on your uploads.

Keep working on this one, I am sure the result you desire will be achieved, you are just that way~meant that as a compliment!

IMHO, this one would work better (for me, anyway) if the rose was darker. There's just not enough contrast between it and the bell (?) of the horn. If you haven't already done so, you might want to experiment with the "Channel Mixer" control of PS. The Hue & Saturation control allows for monochrome adjustment too, and offers more control with respect to color adjustments (6 colors vs. 3 for Channel Mixer).

I like the view looking into the horn. I was thinking about this today and thought the reflections would be hard to control in this view. If you have a flashlight, turn out all the lights in the room, paint the bell of the horn with the flashlight from the camera position and watch where the reflections go, then make those areas monochromatic in some way as was suggested with tenting... I'd do the rose bud placed to block the reflection of the camera... I am sure a violin is easier than a french horn of course ;)

I love the tones you have used here, Lou Ann, but I have to agree that the rose has to be red to make it stand out. Nice reflections on the horn.

Keep playing - you'll get it where you want it. I agree with the red rose comments - it makes a nice contrast to a neutral toned image.

I like the champagne tones and the reflections. The rose kind of gets a little lost, so I agree that it should be in color. The perspective here looks a little crunched, I think I want to see the horn with more attention to the curved and bent portions, but then that's just my opinion, I find the details interesting. It is a lovely image as is. The French horn is so regal in nature, maybe placing it on a darker backround will also make it more of a stand out.

Hi Lou Ann, this looks like a really difficult project to undertake with all the reflections. I like Jayme's suggestion of using a dark background.

I'm not sure the rose is necessary, the horn itself is such a beautiful instrument with it's rounded shape and curves.
