Beautiful image. Excellent point of view. "F8 and be there", perfectly realized. Bounce flash is not only good light for this, but the most sensitive use of strobe that could be had in a situation like this. Illuminating without redefining the moment as a photo-op. Bright but not intrusive or blinding to the subjects. The gestures and expressions of all the participants contribute to one emotional message. One does not need to wonder about what was going on, how these people felt or the sincerity of their involvement. Just excellent.

Photographer issues: The background almost looks digitally created. What made it look just so? Normal light falloff high on the walls? How large was the room, how far away was that wall? How high was the ceiling? Thanks... t

The background is real and was a moment during an event I was hired to shoot. The room was probably 20x30 with a 9-10 ft ceiling., i used full power on the strobe to get the lighting I wanted. I tried the medium setting to get more images on the card with my canon D60.

As for flash, i used an index card on a flash and bounced it off the ceiling. I used the aperture to control lighting due to distance.

I like capturing people as they are and dislike folks cheesing it up for the camera.

Used to work for a paper but they were taken aback by the people pictures that showed folks as they were. Disagreements over matters made me leave the publication. This was one image they bought from me.

It's great when you can use such an old and low tech trick (the index card) on a gee-whizz high tech digital camera. Keep it up Steven, you've got what it takes.

Looking at this image again, I like that her upraised hand, "feelin' the spirit!", is the brightest area in the photo, as if lit by that spirit. And that she is dressed in the brightest clothing in the room. Lots of elements that, while they might seem co-incidental, really are the sign of an attentive photographer. I have a friend whose favorite saying is "Luck is when preparation meets opportunity", and you've made this "lucky" shot happen with high and low tech skills and equipment, and engaging life with an open heart and open eyes... t
