Barrels of Fun

jenna_g

I need some suggestions here. At the state fairgounds elementary school children have been painting trash barrels for the upcoming state fair. I've come here a few times to try and shoot these barrels (there are about 100 or so lined up) with little success. This is just one sample of a shot I took that seems lacking. Am I wasting my time here, or do you have any suggestions if I go back and reshoot. Thanks for your input.

With that many multi-colored barrels, I think there are some possibilities. In nice lighting conditions I would spend some time here. I would stand on the barrels and shoot down, get on the ground and shoot up etc. It would be nice to get a kid to stand by the barrels. This image is a little too compressed and does not include enough barrels in my opinion.

nice barrels - it like one of my shots of big pots. I like your work - this shot and the rest of your portfolio are evedience of and eye and a technical understanding. Also it is foddre for jealousy - One day I too will own a D70 :( :)

I would love to catch the kids painting the barrels, but I'm sure this is done mid-day. I guess I'm intrigued by the colors and shapes of the of the open-end barrels, but as this random sample suggests I've been unable to make them interesting. Anyway you're comments are indeed helpful. Thanks!

Thanks for the comment. I just recently purchased my D70 and I'm still very much in learning mode with this camera. Tim, who commented above, is using this camera in a very creative way. I think it's a wonderful tool and hopefully I will master it soon so my shots will be more consistent.

I like the photo and also think theres no many o them :).

I would play a bit with them ex:

Make a circle with them, then in the middle of the circle put one upside down. May take a serie from up, from the point of view of one of the barrels making the circle and some others from the one in the middle.

Just a thought... play with them would be my hmble advice.

You are doing great with it and as for Tim - I am familiar with his art and am a big fan - Good luck as you go out shooting. I look forward to more submissions from you.

The composition works well, although it almost appears off because of the barrells in the back on the right side being in by a few inches, but I love it. Great work. I would get in there and play with all kinds of compositions if I were you, what a great place to play with a camera.

Jenna,

On the first look at this image, I was struck by the thought, that you have managed to make a relatively mundane set of objects appear dynamic.

So you are certainly not wasting your time in trying to improve, with work on subjects such as this.

I think that the depth of focus could be more smoothly graduated (I think that is what I mean to say).
