This is the updated image, with changes made according to David Farler's critique.

"A few points to consider

David Farler, August 17, 2004; 10:04 A.M.

1. Watch cropping: the bridge support on the left border is intense. Could've done without it.

2. The wide-angle distortion is "distracting" because it's not enough to make a statement, and not flat enough to be neutral.

3. The black stripe that is the barge commands a lot of graphic attention. It's the only thing that dark (aside from the bridge support).

4. I'd like to see a little more cincy in the shot.

5. Good exposure for this time of day. Way to not blow out the lights.

6. As a suggestion, experiment with different horizon heights. Go extreme.

7. See what happens with longer lense"

I cropped the bridge support out, and made the barge more transparent to rob it of some emphasis. The horizon is a bit lower now too.

this is an updated version, addressing several of the points brought up by "David Farler",

my fellow design student friend. Next time, I plan to use a more "normal" focal length to

avoid odd distortion.

Pete's right, could use more contrast and the horizon is still distracting, with the arc curve. Is it the lens or is it really curved? If it's really curved forget my comment. And while I love the sky, the rule of thirds should apply here, I'd crop out some on the top and on either side where nothing of real interesting is going on. I'm not sure about the barge either, since I know about the barges on the Ohio, I like it, but others may be somewhat confused since there's only a small portion of the barge showing. I like the thin strip of light on the barge, but the barge kind of gets blurry towards the front end. Must be that rushing water of the Ohio. Beautiful city Cincinnnati! I prefer the view from old I-65 North just as you came down that God awful curvy hill in KY to cross the bridge.

Thanks to my crit panel, I'll return to the river soon with a better idea of what to do. Thanks for your help!

  • use "normal focal length (maybe 50mm or more)
  • get in tighter to reveal more details in the city
  • The contrast, or lack of it, is appealing to me here
