Rainbow Falls, Big Island, Hawaii

vincetylor

Rainbow Falls in Hilo has always been a popular destination for any visitor to that island. With all the rain Hilo gets the falls is almost always full and quite photogenic. The abundance of rain also guarantees those nice rich greens throughout. I have been here many times, but this time I felt like I was able to catch on film a fair measure of what this place is really like. It was on and off raining the entire shoot. Used a tripod and cable release for greater depth of field as well as to catch some smoother water movement. Shutter was close to one second... maybe two. As always your opinions/comments are greatly appreciated! www.hawaiianphotos.net

Beautiful shot, nice framed, composition is OK, maybe the file is so large but it doesn't matter on photograph as well. I appreciate your efficient to produce good quality photos and to show Hawaii nature beauty. Keep it up

Congrats! This is another creatively unusual (usual to you) heaven on earth with the wonderful soul and spirit of Hawaii. A solid 7:7 top photo to me.

How do you do it Vince? Over and over 7/7.

One Question, what time of the day did you take this shot? Early Morning, afternoon?

Best regards Gustavo.

beautiful and lush...especially like the foliage in the foreground...feel like I have hacked my way through the jungle to get this awesome unspoiled view. I like the frondy plant on the right, the mini falls on the left and the center arena splash...lots to keep me interested.

That is how I felt Kristin... hauling that tripod all over this place. Tough job, but somebody has to do it. ...heh

Jayme, your "poured light" comment is a new one for me. I like that!

Taken in the late morning Gustavo... perhaps around 11am. Overcast conditions are essential at this place, whatever time you shoot.

Sorry to hear Wilson. Guess you will simply have to go back sometime. Although if my memory serves me well, you DID catch one very nice waterfall image! Hope them Mac-nuts were worth sacrificing the Falls as well as Golden light volcano images. If it made the girls happy, I'm sure it was!

Many thanks again to all of you for taking the time. Thanks too for the link Jay...excellent catch!

Wonderful, my fav shade of green, deep, luscious and wet. I do however have two minor problems with this. First, the plant the jerks up( second from the bottom-right corner) is a little too much framing IMHO. It 'block's' I guess that's the right word, the flow of the water for me. The second problem is that the whole scene is a little too unreal, a little too perfect. That may sound strange, but I almost want a bit of imperfection in there to make it look more natural. Know what I mean? I know part of nature photography is getting order out of chaos, but... too much order makes it look like an attraction at a themepark. Damn themeparks.

Hey Stephen, come on over to my folder...I've got plenty of those imperfections :0) But seriously Vince, regarding "another bland sky", I think you are still better with it than without. The sky gives the scene depth and provides the audience a reference point for size and distance. Regards.

Thanks Stephen and Walt. I agree Stephen, and am taking all critiques/suggestions to heart nowadays. Here, does this add enough of a blemish?? Also took care of the sky as well.

I figured you could probably use the shower anyway Walt...it is the middle of Summer. Aloha.

Hi Vincent, very nice take. Initially I thought about that sliver of sky too...and I'm on the fence with that one. The other thought I have is the bottom left of the frame, if the plants were cropped so the water met the left frame, just left of the little waterfall, it may create an illusion of more movement with the water. Thought I'd say that before the standard "WOW" which your photo's seem to always get from me! ;-)

Don't ask me how I didn't have you marked as interesting but I cleared that problem up. Darn, I wish I got this much feedback on images!!! This is great. I guess when you burn little mannequin hands and take a picture of it, people tend to worry about you a bit... LOL...

A great image bud, as all your images are. Hope all is well... Dave

Vincent, Who am I to critique a big selling print? I've looked at this one with sky showing & without and I prefer the one without sky. I don't know, perhaps it loses a bit of that feeling of seclusion? Having said that I would hang either version on my wall in a minute. Beautiful soft lighting allows details to come through that would be hidden under the dark shadows created by a bright, mid day sun. By the way, how large have you blown these up to & still been pleased with the result? Your site says you sell 24"x36" which is really impressive coming from a 1 x 1 1/2 inch piece of film. Best, LM.

Yes Len, 24x36 is the limit. We could sell larger on certain images, especially since a tripod is almost always used nowadays. A few years ago nobody could go that large and maintain quality. It has more to do with Hi-res scanning, as well as the LED printers that simply did not exist even recently. Plus now they have software (Lizard's Genuine Fractals for instance) that can allow us to increase the size even more with no visible reduction in quality (so it has been claimed). We will be looking into that very soon just to see whats what. Thanks for asking.

Mahalos again to all of you that took the time to add something to this discussion. Hopefully we are all a little smarter/wiser/drenched now because of it. Aloha.

Vincent, How anyone would give you less than sevens on this is beyond me. Looks like you've just discovered a secret, magical place! Well done!!!
