I would have considered making the distance from the eye to the upper left corner and the snout to the lower right corner the same. See how the latter now looks too pinched?

This is a crop of my shot -- I'll extend the green space in front of his snout and compare to see if that improves it.

Well, that's a different solution, and I like that the spacing of the leg to edge is the same as the snout to edge, but you want to get the eye away from the center and closer to a power point.

...and have tried recropping to get that eye higher relative to the upper edge of the picture.

better, but still quite central. Just be aware of it when you're out shooting.

Thanks for your help -- I do appreciate it. I'm still fairly new to this and it took me a little bit to figure out what you meant by power points -- I'll keep the Rule of Thirds in mind next time I get some shooting in.
