abdul smith 0 Posted July 25, 2004 i checked out the website, and the photos are excellent. the point of view seems very anti-aristide, but the work is excellent. and since im not there and the you were, who am I to dispute what you observed. very nice work. Link to comment
brian_w. 0 Posted July 25, 2004 I took pictures of what I saw... that is all. Photojournalists have to be objective. In short- the majority of pro-Aristide citizens only wanted their democracy back.. the president they elected with their own votes- however- The truth was that at the time, the majority of people in Port-au-prince were anti-Aristide. In the slums, such as City Soleil and La Saline, i spent time with people who wanted Aristide back.. but many locals considered journalists to be on Bush's side, (which assisted in removing Aristide), so, there was sometimes a lot of resistance to us (several journalists were killed or wounded). At the time, the pro-Aristide chimere (a group of armed guys who would attack people in the city) were kindof wreaking havoc in parts of Port-au-Prince.. The local police and Rebels at night would engage in street battles with them.. But, regular pro-aristide citizens were even afraid of chemere. You brought up an interesting point.. perhaps I should put some more photos of Pro-Aristide people on the site... The thing is though- What was happening (the negative things) was not due to Pro-Aristide people, it was due to a group of thugs who also happened to be Pro-Aristide. Link to comment
abdul smith 0 Posted July 25, 2004 for the explanation Brian. that does help to clear things up a bit. And again, my knowledge of the conflict in haiti is only secondhand (books, media [independent and in rare cases otherwise], etc..) so i could never challenge what you saw with your own eyes. Thanks for taking the time out to clarify however. And once again, excellent work. I just looked through the photos again. If you dont mind my asking, what kind of equipment was this shot with?
