This is very much like my first upload, BUT, the branches are gone...it seemed that many people did not care for them...Thanks for your comments and ratings...David

Wow... that is indeed a glorious sunset. :-) I love everything about it, from the colors to the reflection in the water. Great job! 6/7 aesthetics

Yes it is a glorious sunrise. The capture is superb and the cloud formation remarquable, like a 3D effect. Congratulation for an excellent work.

When I saw this sunrise forming, I remembered a story a lady had told

me about the first night she was at her cottage and the rockface

across from her lit up purple as the sunset and she thought this was

wonderful that it did this every night.

It is now some 40 years later and it has never done it again...

Despite the car being packed, the dogs fussing, and my work day

starting too soon down in the city, I turned off the car and grabbed

my camera in order to capture this moment in time.

No question this is a brilliant sunset, and you captured the colors very well, but it's really just a run-of-the-mill sunset shot. To be sure, it's a real GOOD run-of-the-mill sunset shot, but it's very plain. Is there nothing around the location to include? An old boat? Or even a new boat? Dock? Brush in the water? Church steeple? Ducks swimming in the water/flying overhead? I think you could have done a lot with reflection; go to a portrait orientation and bring your camera very close to the water level and include sky AND water for a cool effect. Also, I think it could have been a little sharper. Did you put any sharpening on this? It doesn't like like it...

Don't get me wrong, it's a great shot, and one you can save and have a GREAT sky to put in other shots for composite work, but my rating on this would be 7 for aesthetices and 3 on originality.

Dear Phil,

As it happens, my first effort and my first upload to this site was a shot much like this, but there were branches in the top corner and some people did not appreciate those distractions so I hunted through my shots from that day and found this...almost the same as the original, which is still available for viewing here, and of course, in the end it seems that people seem to like the first one better.

I'll keep watching the sky and I'll try for the old boat idea on the next worthy morning...

Oh yes, this is a sunrise, not a sunset...

Thanks for your comments!

Yes, this is the other one I am thinking about...but, I was only able to take it with a 1.2 megapixel camera...as that is all I had at the time...and I don't think it will come out so well printed larger...but I will send it off to be printed as well...and I will let y'all know...David

David,

That looks pretty damn good for 1.2MP. I have several in my portfolio that were taken with a 2.1mp, including my highest rated photo of a sunrise over a lake. How big does the print for the contest have to be?

I've made decent 8x10s from my old camera, but if they would take a 4x6, I would send this one. I like the other picture, and I like what you said about it. Contests like that look for something in a picture that stands out above all of the others. There will probably be 1000 sunset pictures, but this one here is one of the best I've seen in a while. How good are you at photoshop? You could put that dead tree in the front of this one.

I suspect I could get that tree in front of this...but hmmmmmmmmmmm...I think what I will do is get a really fine print of this and the other...with the dead tree...and after I agonize over all the rest of the possible pictures, I think I will send both of these...as they will accept two entries from one person...and then we shall see if one or the other catches their eye...

We will see...now of course I have to decide if I should send this version of this shot, or the other that has some branches in front of the sunrise...
