I prefer the original photo to the version with the top cropped off, because in the original, the twisted form of the foreground tree is echoed in some of the clouds which are missing from the cropped version.

Wow. Tough crew. I'm puzzled at the descriptions of the image as "sloppy," particularly with respect to the relationship between the two trees. It looks to me like the photographer very carefully aligned the branch from the right tree with the top edge of the foliage on the left tree. It's as if the one is caressing the other. A bit higher or a bit lower camera position would have lost this aspect and muddied the image. As to the grain ラ hey, that's film. And I, too, am puzzled at the comments that this is not a proper picture of the Grand Canyon. I don't think it's a picture of the Grand Canyon. It's of two trees and their relationship to each other and to an ancient, gnarled, immense landscape beyond. The river ラ is it time? ラ goes off forever. How old are the trees, and yet how insignificant in relation to the far older gorge behind them, and which they seem almost poised to enter? How many things have happened as these two trees sprouted and grew, as other trees died and decomposed, as the thousands of days, and hundreds of years passed, as the river went on endlessly below them?

I suppose technical criticisms ラ the failure of the picture to follow camera club rules ラ provide a comforting anchor for some, but they miss the magic of the picture.

hi Michael,

I like the twisted tree and the twisted clouds in the sky - together they add lots of interest and punch to the photo, and make it so much more than they typical grand canyon shot. Beautiful detail, and I love it in b/w! Great shot! Jennifer

btw, I disagree with the posters who submitted their own crops of this photo - I prefer it the original way. I think that the image suffers if you lose the clouds - the swirls and detail there really add depth and vitality to the photo. And ditto for the "tangle" in the upper right - lose that, and you lose some of the interest of the picture. For me, I appreciate the way the clouds sort of "twist" and echo the twisted trees.

thanks,

Jennifer

Michael, congratulation for this POW. This picture is great, but may I say that it is not my prefered one in your portfolio? I think, particularly to your portraits that are incredible for their depth and humanity. And I take this opportunity to thank you for your kindness and generosity in sharing you knowledge.

Yours

didn't have time to read tru the comments so i dont know if i'm repeating whats already been said.

has a nice ansel adams look. i don't like the way the two trees give a cramped feel to the photo especially the right one.

I really like the composition: living vs. dead, survival in a hostile environment, framing the river, deep in the canyon. It moves me, which is what a photo is supposed to do.
