varjag 0 Posted July 6, 2004 Notice how the kid's pose and the roof are reminiscent of silhouette and stairs on the road sign. But the scene is perhaps too cluttered with detail. What could be cropped/deemphasised in your opinion? Link to comment
bens 0 Posted July 6, 2004 Eugene, this is really enjoyable and i'd be hard pressed to make many suggestions. as a street scene, its going to be cluttered, so i wouldn't worry to much. the lines sideways and up and down (the tanks) are interesting, great depth of field, and unusual setting. it works as is. if you could lighten/brighten the face of the boy on the left on the stairs, perhaps that would add something. otherwise, i'd leave it alone. very nice job. varjag 0 Posted July 18, 2004 Ben, Jukka - thanks! The image is the original uncropped capture from a digital camera. And yes, it was originally in colour, but it was all too greenish: the grass, the forest afar, and the khaki-green tanks, so BW seemed natural choice. I'll try to tweak the image with per your suggestions folks and will post the result here. Link to comment
varjag 0 Posted September 2, 2004 Ok, after tweaking the image back and forth I decided to get rid of film grain effect and add some brightness to the picture. Link to comment
johncrosley 1 Posted September 7, 2004 Hi, I looked at your revised print and Jukka's suggested crop and curve adjustment and think Jukka had the right idea. You may have to e-mail him to find out how he did it exactly, but this is a priceless image, but too cluttered as you suspected and Jukka simplified it. When I worked as a wire service photo editor for Associated Press, photo retouchers sprayed grayish paint over the background to de-emphasize it. Jukka's "curve adjustment" would have the same effect. And the women's posteriors detract from the makings of a very fine image. I'd work on it some more. With respect for fine "street" photography.
