Do the heat waves and smoke help or hurt this image? I have others but this one (with

the muzzle flash) seem to stand out to me, for lack of a better word "gritty"

 

I would very much like you honest OPINION of the PHOTO

I like the picture.... would be nice if you showed the people dying on the receiving end. That would give a better idea of the reality of things.

smoke and waves help the image- and the word gritty is a good one to describe it. Tighter framing-cutting off the nose of the boat and zeroing on the marine is an option.

Hoo Rah! The heat and smoke are great at indicating the fire power of the Mini-gun.

 

A tighter crop would prbably help this shot, perhaps from between the Marine and the M-249 over to the right of the stream of empty brass. Adjustments to bring out more detail in the face of the young Devil Dog as he unleashes the Mini-gun would make the photo pop.

So, you asked for a critique. Ok.

First, it is United States Marine CORPS, not Core. BIG difference.

Second, since you asked specifically if the heat waves and smoke (and nothing else, so I won't comment on the tip of the boat like others have), the heat and smoke actually help the shot and put in the perspecitive that it is actually in the heat of battle, even though it is obviously a training excersise.

I really like this image and think that much like the minigun is very powerful, i would leave exactly as it is. It shows the how raw the situation is.

Hmmm. It is powerful shot.

Generally it's a good picure, especially the fire that comes out of the gun because that's one of the only elements that shows it is not a b/w or desaturated photo (yes, of course, there are other colors too, but it gives a monochromatic impression). This adds to the power of the other colors. As for the cropping, I wonder if the photo wouldn't be more interesting if you show more of the boat.

I was a Green Beret although on leaving became pro life. I really wish that dialogue could replace wars and words replace weapons, but I guess that there is just to much hate in the world and not enough speakers of peace.

 

This is a very good shot and an excellent enactment of the real thing.

u got it anway, it has a thrilling/killing feel to it, i dont know if i like the intense passion to kill but i do like the composition and the execution of the shot
