the grey house 0 Posted June 29, 2004 BackgroundI came across this fuel pump in the middle of a field in Scotland. I guess it was probably something to do with the broken down garage close by and that the roads / forecourt had been removed over time to allow for further grazing land. I would be most grateful for any comments you have. Regards Paul - The Grey House Photography Link to comment
cappoldt 0 Posted June 29, 2004 I love this - such an odd item to be seen within this setting. Takes a great eye to spot such a composition! Great colors, too. The sheep have halos - I'm fairly certain that's deliberate - though I'd too like to see the image "clean" with no effects. Kudos! Link to comment
magdalenka1 0 Posted June 29, 2004 The surreal look you got here is captivating. I like especially your sense of humor since I believe photography should not always be too serious! ;) Link to comment
johnorban 0 Posted June 29, 2004 A great find and an interesting composition, but why the drastic manipulation of hues? The pump situated in the field is surreal enough without having to distort reality even further (IMHO). Link to comment
the grey house 0 Posted June 29, 2004 Thanks all for your comments and suggestions - John, you raise an interesting point. I guess I create an impage and work on it until I'm happy with it - if that means changing the context even further then so be it. It does not always work - I had in mind a burnt sienna landscape - perhaps echos of the australian outback - to further emphasize the juxtaposition created here. Thanks again, Regards Paul. Guest Guest Posted June 29, 2004 Paul, I find the colors pleasing and different. Why did you choose to keep the background between the pump hoses and the body of the pump sharp and without the whitish dreamy effect? Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted June 30, 2004 Paul the juxtaposition is simply brilliant! what an eye you have, and yes, a sense of humor as well. I wish it was a tad less "reddish", but that is me.. and I realy widely smiled seeing that match.. Pnina Link to comment
the grey house 0 Posted June 30, 2004 Dear All, Thanks so much again for your comments and suggestions. Knicki, I found the only way to get the blurr off the pipe was to widen the histroy brush size. It looked very odd with just the piping without the blur. I'm not sure it works perfectly as it is - perhaps I need to re-think that bit. Pnina, thanks again for your kind words, I'm pleased you enjoyed the work. Regards to all, Paul... Link to comment
sarahunderhill 1 Posted June 30, 2004 I like these photos of odd objects in odd settings. A new series? You know a painter never really finishes a painting... Link to comment
pawel_stradowski 0 Posted June 30, 2004 It's definitely original, but there is something missing and I don't know what... Maybe some strong point to know what to focus on? Cheers That's only my humble opinion Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted June 30, 2004 Thanks for explaining it Paul. I look forward to viewing more of your work. Knicki Link to comment
www.ianleake.com 0 Posted June 30, 2004 Hi Paul. There's something in this that grabs my attention and won't let go. I'm not sure yet whether it's the subject, the striking colour scheme, or the unusual composition that makes it work, but it works for me. Link to comment
mike werkhoven 0 Posted July 1, 2004 This a funny one, an acid landscape and static gas totem statue ;~) mike Link to comment
ronnievalentine 0 Posted July 3, 2004 Paul, What a really unique perspective! Very original and worthy of higher ratings! Cheers, Ronnie Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted July 5, 2004 I like it and especially because the fuel pump seems so out of place. I think this could work in sepia tones, as well. Link to comment
ming_chiu 0 Posted July 7, 2004 This is beautiful. You are at it again with a creative master piece. However I guess it might be better to have the skyline in a little darker colour. The white batch of cloud is a bit too excessive and has somehow rendered this picture a little empty. I guess the reason why is becuase the fuel pump is off center. Nevertheless the colour is beautiful..... Link to comment
v 0 Posted July 14, 2004 Hi,Paul! very old gas pump, is it? Interesting composition, I do like it. I am not sure the intensity of colours should be this high, however I do see the idea behind. Nice shot! Link to comment
