Great idea, well executed. I do like Vincent's crop since it gives the shell more prominance and readily readable as "shell."

This pic is very creative. Very well planned. In my opinion its good the way it is. To light up the grass would have been useless to me being that he is in water (how to set up a light for that without being a octopus or another person). Second with the lense he is using it would not show up too good. I think the fact that he got the shell and the sky in focus is a awsome achievment and excellent planning in creativity. This si a picture you can be creative with though....maybe a few shots with lightning in the background or prop up little martian models walking on the water away from the shell towards the land ?????? Excellent shot and very creative, Thank You

Without a doubt you have got some exceptional imagery on this site, but I do not see the rationale for all these high ratings on this image. For starters it looks significantly underexposed and full of darkness especially the shell which is supposed to be the focal point. The neon glow is a nice idea but I find it did not do anything in adding interest to the shot. As a matter of fact the blue seems to me to be out of sync with the rest of the image. What I probably would have done was to zero in on the shell get some light on it (fill flash or longer exposure)so that the pastel orange colour of the shell can be balanced against the neon glow inside. Nevertheless I don't think I am one to give you advice (you're awesome) but I just cannot see the justification of any rating above 4/4 for this PARTICULAR image. Thanks.

if indeed this is a "bar" as knicki points out, I guess that would make it "the blue-oyster bar" (like in the movie Police Academy) I'm staying far away! :-} This is a whole new level of creativity in my opinion.

I went to your folder and, honestly, this pales in comparison with your other work.

Ben, what do you mean "Nevertheless I don't think I am one to give you advice", your work is stunning, and your the only one that seems to have a handle on the problems glaringly evident, IMHO.

First of all, why is there any water on the left on the right side of the ocean. Here in Del Mar, California water runs downhill, even on the coast?

Since when did a 50/50 split in a composition work better than a 33/66, or thereabouts? I have not seen it many times, if ever, and certainly not here.

The blue light is a distraction to an interesting sunset, so something needs to be improved down there to make it a stronger center of interest instead.

Back to the drawing board on this one. Ben is right, 4/4, again, IMHO. Reward e for effort, but reality dictates reality in judging final presentaion.

"Why any normally cognitive human would rate this a 2 for Originality escapes me!" Walter says above. True, the originalty is there, even if the technique is not.

I will give e for effort. Keep up the otherwise good work. Look forward to you conquoring this one. If it were easy, I'd take up a different sport!!!

Blessings, MS

PS - Vincent K. Tylor cropping takes out the one thing going for it, a bit of left/right balance.

Wow lots of action over here. My crop was certainly not in any way a suggestion on how this image should be cropped and posted. It was simply to *suggest* how this image might be made more effective if a little more focus was placed on the shell itself. Which I might add, I happen to disagree regarding the blue light being a distraction. It works very well here Bernie. A 50/50 composition also works effectively in many cases. There are NO hard and fast rules in this craft. Creativity would only be stifled. Just my opinion... of course. I see there are many. This is really how we all improve! Aloha.

I agree, this is not your best...but...the 50/50 composition is just right for this. Rules are made to be broken, especially in photography.

As for the water, appartently in California, the high tide doesn't leave water in the grassy areas.....;-). As for the 4/4...horse feathers...Anyone who's been out and tried to create a shot like this knows this is not easy to pull off. Like I said, this is not your best...but sure is a hard 11...not an 8...take care...Thanks for the many splendid ideas you've shared with us...

Without reading all the other comments:

It works - it captures the attention, and that's good. The surrealism - something odd, but what is it? Of course that question should never be answered - mystery is the point.

The lit interior lobe of the shell looks as if it leads into another universe - one wonders what's in there.

And I like the twilit look.
