dwm1953 0 Posted June 16, 2004 Very colorful shot. But in the beginning at least, less is more. It seems to me that what separates the great photographers at this site from the so-so ones (I'm one of the so-so ones) is their ability to focus in on the concept they are trying to express and simplify their composition to provide the viewer with a clear expression of the concept. So in that vein, next time try isolating a single butterfly. Shoot like a million pictures of it, in the process of doing this try to understand the subject and what you are trying to express. Pick the best one or two pictures that best exemplify your expression, be it beauty, light, color, form, motion, butterflyness, whatever and work with these in your image editor (Photoshop Elements?) to further refine your expression. Welcome to the journey, you've made a good start. Link to comment
pmac 0 Posted June 16, 2004 Hi Natalie This is an excellent beginning. If anything, you have a little too much in focus here, which tends to confuse the eye. As previously stated, shoot a load of the same subject. Vary things like composition, exposure, focus. In this case I would have tried opening up the aperture to give less depth of field, throwing the background more out of focus. I just wish I had a butterfly shot half as good as this, though. Keep it up. Paul Link to comment
