Nice job on this image! How did you determine the 6 hour exposure time? I like the way that the mountains have some detail but it is very subtle. Great shot - when you have a chance please drop me an e-mail and let me know how to determine exposure for shots like this. (or just post it with this critique request)

I did not record the F-Stop but it was probably 8 or 11 as that is where the lens optics is at peak performance. I used a 6 hour time exposure so the star tracks would be completed in the frame. A shorter exposure would result in shorter tracks. Even if you do a 30 minute exposure you will get star tracks, it depends on the composition. I prefer shooting north as that will result in more circular tracks but I had to shoot west to get the mountains. Bottom line, its really a matter of trial and error. Do it enough and you will get a sense of the correct settings. Thnaks for your comments. :>))

I don't understand Corey's comment, but I really like this photograph. Thanks for the technical information, and more importantly your honesty about the haphazard nature of this work. I feel inspired to have a go. I haven't tried to photograph anything remotely astronomical for over 12 years after a disasterous evening attempting to photograph a Lunar Eclipse. I didn't even attempt to photograph the Solar Eclipse that we had here in the United Kingdom in 1999. But when in Scotland next month I will attempt an homage. Thanks.

in a 6 hour exposure you should get an arc covering a 90 degree angle, here you are getting an angle no longer than 45 degrees. I think this is closer to a couple of hours than 6 hours... with the math appart... a great shot!
