Ragged Tooth Shark (2)

johannes_felten

I used a small aperture in order to ensure depth of field for this critical close up range. The flash was set to TTL which was, in itself, problematic because of the shark's white belly. But this was not the kind of situation in which you have time to start working out your flash settings. I was busy enough controlling my breathing so I would'nt get a heart attack.

This shark was swimming towards me on collision course very slowly, apparently not

willing to stretch a muscle to avoid me, so I descended just a little to let him glide past me

inches above my head. With my 15mm wideangle lens I had to get him from up close in

order to get a decent shot.

Fantastic shot, I cannot believe people don't rate it much higher. It seems like you eliminated original background? I wonder how it looks like unmanipulated (email me or post here if you can).

Johannes, how did the shark react to the flash going off in its face? Did it react at all? Terrific photo. How you maintained your composure sufficiently to take this shot is beyond me.

I cannot have the most far idea of how could you approach so much to a beast like this... was this *really* shot underwater...? Aren't you in life risk in such a situation?

Whatever, it's a great shot!

Since I shot this with a small aperture and TTL flash, the background was left almost completely in the dark. The little that did show, however, distracted me from the subject so I blackened this out completely. When I look at a photo I always ask myself - Does the background contribute anything to the overall effect of the image? Often, the background helps to put an image into perspective and context. For me, in this case, it didn't. Thank you for your comments.

There was almost no reaction at all from the shark when the flash went off, although I myself was a little anxious and apprehensive of how it would react at the time I took this shot.
