htc 0 Posted May 26, 2004 hmmm, look like a graffiti to me. I struggled a little bit to see what's there. Well, the photo fits in the theme but is too heavy for me. I find it quite dull(sorry pt, nothing personal) maybe a collage with this photo as a graffiti on a wall would make it to stand alone. Overall it fails, sorry. These are my thoughts, so feel free to disagree. Calin Link to comment
tom t 0 Posted May 26, 2004 Looks like grafiti indeed. I like this one! The bright colors make it pop. Theme fit is obviously OK. And the sarcasm is brilliant! Let's all eat tortilla chips and get smart, lean and healthy :) Good catch, PT! I would not mind seeing this one framed. Funny how opinions can sometimes differ, as well as align :) Tom Link to comment
michael_ward1 0 Posted May 27, 2004 This is, indeed a marvelous find, just about perfectly composed. Though obviously not graffiti, it captures its essence, and so really does look like graffiti. The colors work together (or perhaps it would be better say fight one another) in a way that makes it work as an abstract. And then, of course there are the two superimposed adverts that are just so complementary. This is one for the museum wall. Link to comment
dave_nitsche 0 Posted May 27, 2004 Not really my taste. Just a bit too jumbled and cluttered for me. Just a personal thing... Dave Link to comment
dominiquedodge 0 Posted May 28, 2004 I think PT has done a very good job here. The double conflicting message is clear and although I don't "like" the colours I think they enhance the photo, as Michael said. There are too many colours and words for us to remain comfortable as we are bombarded by advertising messages. You have expressed that idea well. Very creative. Link to comment
darrellwhittle 0 Posted May 29, 2004 Love this image. It has something to say about western consumer society and i think the idea/image would be a commercial seller to the right publication. I would be very interested to know how this was produced. Was it a straight capture with +/- some PS processing or two images combined? Love to know. A couple of niggles: The lighter strip at the bottom could be lost and i also think the image would be stonger with a little more of the left hand bag showing - just enough to have a 3x repeat of the 'Deli Style' lettering in full and so the 'E' is not so close to the edge of the image. Otherwise very nice indeed. Cheers Link to comment
pt2 0 Posted May 29, 2004 PT thanks all who stopped by to view and comment. In keeping with the food theme, I think this image is a lot like black olives -- you either love them or hate them, but there is no in between. The image is intended to communicate the heavy dose of often in-your-face, discordant, and contradictary advertising and diet advice that we consumers receive. The bright colors, jumbled, and cluttered look are intended to reflect the uneasy feelings we have about that. The two images -- a photo of bags of chips on a shelf and a photo of a paper bag with the "5 a day" slogan -- were chose to show the different directions that marketers try to pull us and to mirror business' attempt to capitalize on our health concerns. The image is a two layer PS composite. After combining the two original photos, I just tweaked saturation, levels, brightness, and contrast until I arrived at the desired result. My apologies if you don't care for black olives. Link to comment
dominiquedodge 0 Posted May 31, 2004 I agree with Darrell's comment about the lighter strip at the bottom. I had been thinking of mentionning it, but didn't in the end. A case of not wanting to fix a good thing ... It's sometimes hard to judge which comments to include, especially when the photo is good. Perhaps we should agree to never hold back? I'd be interested to know what Blending Mode you used to combine the two photos. Link to comment
pt2 0 Posted May 31, 2004 Dominique, I used PS Elements which does not provide blending modes per se. It does permit the user to control the opacity of the various layers and images. If memory serves, the "chips" photo was the background image and the "5 a day" image was the uppermost with about a 40% opacity. I hope this helps to answer your question. Link to comment
