Vancouver - Sunset

pretend as if i am two different people reviewing this photo. the first says "that photo is lovely. the interesting line that the cloud forms draws the eye across the picture, while the shimmering light reminds me of being in vancouver." the second person says "this is a nice picture but it could use a foreground element to add a little spice." but either way, i'm sure you enjoyed shooting it. cheers!

I'm sorry but this is at best an average sunset pic. The horizon is not straight. A few minutes with an image editing program will correct this. The cloud formation has some interest. It takes a lot to have a frequently photographed subject like this stand out. That is not to say that you shouldn't go for shot's like this if it means something to you. Best wishes!

I agree with previous comments ... sunsets are such a common subject, it's hard to find something that makes it stand out.

 

My thoughts would be to move the horizon off centre ... good ole "rule of thirds" comes into mind, move it so you either emphasize the sky or the water, depending on your mood. (with sun so high in this shot, it's hard to crop the top though). Do you have others in a sequence? as sun got closer to horizon, things would have redden'ed up a bit? The tilt to the horizon can be corrected with almost any photoeditor these days.

 

I also agree that some sort of foreground element would add to the shot. open water like this is rather bland. A subject sillouhetted in the foreground might be nice (e.g. even if it's just someone watching the sunset, or striking a more interesting pose perhaps?). Or a couple of subjects on either side of the sun, forming some framing to the shot?
