Magnolia Madness

laurence_smith2

It has been surprisingly difficult to get a decent "keeper shot" of my Magnolia. Finally, I stepped away and decided to treat a group of blossoms more like a landscape...I was just trying to get too close with other shots. This turned out close to what I wanted. I set the camera to "soft filter +2" setting, put it in manual mode and used Sunny 16 rules for the exposure. I used Sharpen Edges in Photoshop to keep the slight softness in the larger planes, but to sharpen up the petal edges.

I know you said this loses something for you, so I don't exactly know what mockup you had in mind for the photo. What I think of the photo is that the coloration is fine and delicate, and your composition is painterly. It's very, very beautiful.

Very nice. You've captured not only the detail of their beauty but their soft, velvety feel. Not an easy job!
