I like it! The fact that there are three screws and only two shadows gives it an odd feel. But you can't really do much about where the sun is, eh? Great colors and detail. I'm curious - what is this from? What's the "bigger picture"?

Thanks to everyone for commenting. This photo was taken at a scrap woodpile at a construction site. It was very late afternoon which accounts for the long shadows.

John, I hope to have time to view all of your photos and comment on many. I'll start here, with a subject that I might have shot myself, if I'd spotted it (I love, wood and rust, not to mention shadows).

The overall is great. It has a bit of a puzzle in it with the three nails two shadows idea, which I like very much. I also like the way the shaodow runs parallel to the grain of the wood.

A couple of things bother me (a bit) though: I find I'd prefer a more rectangular format stretching over a bit more on the left, with sharper nail heads (more DOF).

Still it's good, well spotted and well executed. Did you do any postshoot burning in the corners?

I appreciate your thoughful critique. The DOF problem with the screw heads does detract from the image, but since this was done with natural light as the sun set, it was too late to reshoot once I realized the problem. I did not burn the corners, but I did aggressively adjust levels to bring out the grain and make the most of the light and shadows. Thanks again!
