I used a Fuji Finepix S7000 for this shot.. I somehow dont like

digital for Landscapes especailly under lowlighting conditions.. It

always gets a color cast and looks a bit off.

I like the effect I got on pic though... especially the Creamish

soft look. No Alterations were made on this one..

Comments and suggestions most welcomed.

Beautifully composed, and I too like the tone you got here. It all adds up to a very calm, peaceful, atmospheric shot. I personally don't like putting credit text on an image- couldn't you use a frame for such info?- but that shouldn't be allowed to detract from a lovely image.

Very nice light. Still, there is something in the composition which bothers me. The first boat too much to the left and too much empty spaces behind the boats, rather than in front of them...

Hi Andy and Salvatore,

Thanks for your valuable comments.

Andy I know the name is a bit distracting... guess once you start with something on yr pics it becomes a standard. Unfortunately I'm pretty new to photoshop so in time hopefully I'll figure a way out of this.

Salvatore, you are pretty right about that, very good point I think the boats pointing into the scence would have made for a better composition rather than out. Unfortunately this was the best I could do and I was aware of this fact.

Thanks for your comments anyway

its a very calm and peaceful snap and there is a touch of a painting on canvas to it. happy shooting! cheers!

Congratulations Herbert, you got a very subtle play of colours and shadows. I like the good use of the grad filter. Have you considered using a tobacco grad one for this kind of sunset/surise images?

I do also apprciate your comment on how did you expose spotmetering the watr by the closer boat. But did you meter with the filter on using your camera builtin photometer or with a handheld one?

Considering the beauty of the scene I would try a closer crop trying to get a more emphasized two thirds composition (cropping out horizontally the bottompart where the shadow of the prow of the closer boat is)

Alberto and all,

Thanks so much for taking the time to comment and rate my pic.

About the spot metering, I first took the reading without the Grad ND from the water next to the side of the 1st boat (the lightish grey area after the boats shadow), locked the exposure, positioned the filter and shot (the one major problem with digital is you cannot see the grad Line.. its pretty tought to figure it out, at least with my camera) I took a lot of shots of this particular scene in various compositions and exposures. Including using my favourite film Velvia, but immediatley fell for this one, for the same reasons repeated by all of you'll. one point I'd like to mention is that I've been trying to get more mood into my pics.. I usually like to have very contrasty and saturated pics (Wich Velvia is great at) but off late I have been experimenting with less contrasty exsposures to give more mood and feel into my pics.

About the closer crop.. Well I never tried it, but somehow I felt I needed to keep this pic untouched as it was .. right from the camera to the Comp.

Once again thanks so much for all your comments and suggestions and your words of encouragment.

Hi Herbert, I notice I scored your shots the lowest. Didn't mean to.......but heres' why. Its a nice shot, actually. But the two boats lead my eye out of the picture than lead into it - it'd have been great if the two boats were further into the shot (to the center or right of center); or pointed right. And second, the bright sun is too bright and draws the eye to it.

Madhu has made some really interesting comments. Untill i read his comment I thought this was a perfect shot! But it still is quite stunning!
