dave_whitehead1 0 Posted March 28, 2004 I suppose it's pretty obvious what has gone on here. I am wrestling with the difference between doing things digitally because I can, and making a worthwhile image. Hmmmm.... what do you think? Link to comment
MichaelChang 12 Posted March 30, 2004 Interesting point, Dave. I think creating any aesthetically worthy image requires competence regardless of methodology or approach. Digital simply allows the creation of the impossible which often appears as incompetence, particularly when commonly used or recognized techniques are implemented. Of course, it can also be used with subtleness to enhance an already strong composition. In this instance, I see an interesting (to look at) image created through mirroring, but I'm failing to see beyond that - not to say it's a poor execution, but rather the experimental nature comes through. And by the way, I'm also wrestling with the same issues, so my feedback should be taken with a bag of salt. :-) Link to comment
dave_whitehead1 0 Posted March 30, 2004 I take your point Michael and thanks for taking the time to make it. I think this is a visually pleasing image, it hangs above my stairs in a good frame and I do like it. But does it have no more substance than, say, a catchy pop song? Does it matter? Should we all stop searching our belly buttons and get on with producing images that simply appeal on the face of it? I suspect that for the time being, I will continue to wrestle.... Link to comment
eileen_craig 0 Posted April 11, 2004 Is the picture in the taking or in the making? This is a very pleasing picture from an artistic viewpoint. The symetry is easy on the eye and the resultant composition worthy of a frame. The single image would have lacked this balance. However is it what was envisaged when taking the picture or the result of seeing the digital potential of an excellent photograph? Digital manipulation can have a point when it moves a picture from the realm of photography into the realm of art but there is always the danger of removing the art from the original photograph. Maybe digital manipulation is a natural progression for accomplished photographers as it is a way to take their first class results to the next level. As a beginner, my holy grail remains the taking of a picture with a WOW factor resulting from the culmination of using the mind's eye, place, light, technique. Sadly the technique remains elusive, but with guidance and perseverance - maybe someday! Link to comment
