Findhorn sunset

ian cameron

Findhorn is a delightful place on the Moray Firth. One year it's fertile soils gave rise to a crop of monster veggies and quickly became a mecca for "environmental earth friendly folk". Fabulous sunsets are not that common I was lucky enough to come across this scene on a flat calm windless day giving rise to near perfect reflections. A 0.6ND filter equalised the sky/reflection and a polariser saturated colours.

absolutley first rate! Well deserving of the 6x7 format. The exposure looks perfect. I would very much like to know how you metered this scene. I visited Scotland many years ago. Since then I have been hard put to find a place whose people and land are so emminently enjoyable. Regards.

The colours and composition everything any photographer could wish for. You are very lucky to have a photolab which hasn't screwed it up!

Once again thank you for all your comments all opinions and ideas are greatly appreciated. The sun set about 15 to 20 minutes earlier than the depicted shot. The amount of sky lit up was phenomenal and I was able to use quite a wide angle lens and still fill the frame with colour. Consequently the polariser had some effect on the blue sections of sky and a marginal effect on the water reflection even though the sun set almost in front of me. I metered from both the reflection in the water and the matching area in the sky (a dusky orange, perceived mid tone),I found approx 2 stops difference between sky / reflection hence the 0.6ND hard grad filter across the horizon. I am not convinced a square format would have added anything to the composition.

When everybody is trying to learn how to manipulate images and the film is "out" of the digital era an amazing work like this send the answer. A clear message about the art, sensibility and perspective of the photographer keeps things clear for the people who can still feel the emotion from this image of pure, plain and simple nature miracle of everyday. ¡Thank You for the gift!
