I would crop the tilted margins out, and possibly re-scan it. Perhaps the negative got striped during development? There's a vertical band sorta tarnishing the shadow: if it's a mark on the film you can clone it out with image processing software.

Leo: thank you for your cropping sugestions, I'll experiment with that. For the lighter shades in the shadow area, it's in the negative itself. I think it's a glare on my lens. You're right it's kind of disturbing.
