pamela_reed 0 Posted March 8, 2004 May I ask how you shot this? Minus the 3 arms... :) I'm always curious. Link to comment
arniemilowsky 0 Posted March 8, 2004 Very nice shot. Shot while both you and her were spinning? Link to comment
neil_cheek 0 Posted March 8, 2004 Pamela - It literally did need 3 arms. I'm holding my daughters hand with my left, camera in the right, my wife is holding her other hand, we then all spin round together. By the way my arm is still aching after all the attempts we made :-) Link to comment
nicolasdaudin 0 Posted March 8, 2004 Very cool photo! I like it when i need to ask myself "how was this done??" very funny :) Link to comment
toddlaffler 0 Posted March 8, 2004 Not to sound like I don't really care about your arm Neil, but in the grand scheme of things, I would say it was WELL worth the pain you are enduring. You have an excellent, extremely original and nice portrait for your efforts, a keepsake. The motion trail is spot on, and so is your DOF. My only nitpick would be the blown out highlight of the hand in the left "hand" corner (pun inteneded). At first I thought, crop it, but then I think this would look like a digital alteration too much, like she was flying and you cut and pasted her in or something, so I'm not really sure how you can deal with this. You can try burning it in a little I guess. Anyway, not to harp on that when you have such a unique image as this. Keep on shootin' and thanks for sharing. Todd Link to comment
neil_cheek 0 Posted March 8, 2004 Todd - thank you for your comments. I had exactly the same problem with the hand, I did try several crops, but always returned to the original image. Unfortunately, I don't have Photoshop etc, so I can't do much about it at the moment. I will certainly come back to this image in the future for further enhancements. Link to comment
nomade 1 Posted March 8, 2004 I've seen this a couple of years ago done by a guy called Wigget, in Photosig. He used the camera setup on his head. Link to comment
livvie 0 Posted March 9, 2004 its lovely and original family shot ...with potential for stock use i suspect. the only focus in this needs to be the face as our brain fills out the other details nicely, even if less than perfect (hand, blown out areas etc). i do so love the versitility and quick feedback of digis for this kind of work. some_body 0 Posted March 9, 2004 As another commenter said above, I have seen this image before (I think in a photo magazine). But I have no problem with you taking an idea and making it your own. Also, I think that I would have cropped out your daughter's right hand. The highlight makes my eye go there, which is a bit distracting from the image as a whole, and it would center her a little more. Besides the uniqueness of the photo, what really makes it happen is the happy look on your daughters face. She doesn't seem to mind all of the retakes! that does not detract from Link to comment
jimmcnitt 0 Posted March 9, 2004 Best viewed large -- perhaps with a motion sickness pill handy. Not only did you capture the movement but also THE expression. Magnificent! --jim Link to comment
roberto_carli 0 Posted March 9, 2004 Fantastic shot!!!Excellent original panning,congrats!! Link to comment
dwscott78 0 Posted March 9, 2004 I like being able to see the left hand in the picture. It makes it easier to tell what's happening. If you had cropped the photo to remove this, it would have made the photo surreal and hard to understand. The only question you have now is "how" not "what". Link to comment
laura2 0 Posted March 10, 2004 Swinging a child around while holding a 10D...the audacity of it all! LOL Link to comment
patanjali_parimi 0 Posted March 10, 2004 Excellent panning. Great idea and execution. At 1/30 you managed really well to freeze the face; your hand must be rock solid.... P. Link to comment
mark_j_james 0 Posted March 10, 2004 Backing up what most of everyone else has already stated, this is great work, though I could only give a 5 for originality, as an image very similar to this is still currenly in print in the M.I.L.K series. Excellent effort though, a very engaging image Link to comment
neil_cheek 0 Posted March 10, 2004 Thank you all for spending time to leave comments. The idea for this came from a book by Lee Frost, which motivated me to get out and give it a go. I'm very happy with the results, it would have been nice to have a wider lens such that both hands would have been visible, plus Photoshop to tone down the blown hand a bit, but I don't, so I tried with the resources I have. Photonet is such a fantastic source of inspiration, and being as I hadn't seen this type of image here before, I wanted to give something back and pass on the idea. Please give it a go, its not quite as easy as it first sounds, but when you get an image you like, it really does put a smile on your face.. Once again thanks for all the comments. Link to comment
