Saw this and thought it was interesting.. an electrical light on a

dead tree stump.. hmmm...

Hard to tell what the subject is--a bit too subtle.

is it bc the light is too small in comparison to the rest of the picture?

My, my Daniel, I think there's a little more wrong than the fact that the subject is too small. Let's see, not focused, blown sky, composition all wrong if your subject is the light, plus it needs a frame dude! lol

Thanks for the new idea on the picture.. it actually helped it out alot... and the main reason all the blown sky and washed out and all is 1. i dont knwo what im doing... jsut startig out... and 2. wasnt even taking pictures for this reason.. jsut out shooting and came up with some favorites

Now you are getting the idea, PN is here to help you take better images, not discourage you from taking pictures. If you truly want to learn how to take a decent photo, look, ask questions, and learn. Taking a picture with a bright sky is not easy for someone just starting out. We all have been there. We first tend to point our camera at the subject we want to capture, which is more than likely darker then the sky. So the subject comes out fine but the sky is gone. If your camera allows, meter for somewhere in between the sky and the subject, then reposition the framing and take the photo. Bracketing up and down 1/2-1 helps. My theory is it's better to underexspose than overexpose, because if you manipulate you images in the computer, you can most times pull out those areas that are undersexposed, while it's not possible to put them back in if overexsposed. So now, go out and take a bunch of pictures with lots of sky, practice, practice, practice. Also, I always keep the copy of my cameras manual close, the answers to most of your question are in there somewhere. Good luck, I'll be checking back to see your progress. Hope this helps. :~)
