Horses in Hana

vincetylor

www.hawaiianphotos.net/mauiphotos.htmThis was at the very end of the Road to Hana on the eastside of Maui on a very windy afternoon (you can see the whitecaps on the water). I was looking for something a bit different than the typical waterfalls-beach-flowers that fill that two hour winding drive. Once I saw the horses here I hopped over the fence, ran up a slight hill to try to catch an angle that might work which would include a little bit of everything. This was taken on my first trip ever to that island a few years ago when I was still fairly new at this. My equipment was inexpensive then and traveling with it was certainly much easier than than it is now. I have since been back several times only to find nothing worth shooting at all. Your comments and opinions are always appreciated. www.hawaiianphotos.netwww.hawaiianphotos.net/Kauaitours.htm

I never feel quite skilled enough to critique your work. Let me just say it's a great photo and a superb addition to your portfolio.

As a side note, my wife saw your folder the other day and was amazed. Great job. AJM

Very beautiful scene, Vincent. Not exactly what I'd expect to see so close to the Hawaiian coast either (a horse pasture, that is).

Did you put that tuft of grass right there in the lower left? LOL ;-) Beautiful work of art, great eye indeed! Congrats on a very fine photo. The frame is very effective too. Jos.

Exceptionally sharp scan ..

But that's not why I'm here. I would like to discuss this 'hopping over the fence'. Did you actually 'hop' over this fence or did you require assistance ...

Very funny Willie. Back then I was a bit younger and could jump over the fence entirely without even getting a running start. Nowadays...I crawl under (and still get stuck)!

AJ, please tell your wife I said many mahalos!!...(you too)

Steve, I could never in a thousand years afford to live where these horsies get to play. Life aint always fair is it?

Jos Van, I would guess the clump of grass had about five minutes of life left before the posse arrived. Or perhaps it was something else that they eaten before and learned to leave alone...or they knew I needed it to balance this image.....

Thanks Jen...many people have a soft spot for horses. I just know that cattle don't have quite the same effect on a photograph. I look for these guys anytime I can find them. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

As said before, it is very difficult to critique a photo that doesnt seem to have any flaws to point out. Maybe the color of the sky could be a couple shades darker/bluer, but maybe not. With this many animals it always seems to be difficult to have them all cooperate at the same time as they did here, im guessing this required some patience. Many nice shades of green, nice curvature of the hill and I don't think this photo would be quite the same without the clump of grass that balances this so well. A very nice addition to your portfolio, Excellent Work!

Vince, thank you for taking this beautifully composed photograph. Years ago,I was on the road to Hana but never made it to the end because it was too late in the day and the weather had turned bad. Now I get to see another aspect of it besides the waterfalls...

Interesting how viewers notice details, clump of grass, when Vincents rich fujis come on. I would nit pick two things... horses a little too close to the backgound shadows, maybe u tele compressed them too much, and, if u had waited for 6 hours for low sidelight, and the horses also had waited for u, u mould have the afternoon sun just touching them, and lighting up parts of the trees to have made an extra ordinary jaymaisel.com horse photo..Aside...Last time I was on the big Island, 1979, I nailed a 600lb marlin fishing off JunkenPo. Again, congrats for using and staying with film..makes those digital types go back to try and manipulate their artificial colors every time a Vince pops up..and, having been conditioned to their dreary digital, tell u that the sea is not really that blue nor is the grass that green...

Well Donna, sounds like you will just have to go back to Maui and finish that trip. Poor thing!

Thomas you said- "horses a little too close to the backgound shadows, maybe u tele compressed them too much, and, if u had waited for 6 hours for low sidelight, and the horses also had waited for u, u mould have the afternoon sun just touching them, and lighting up parts of the trees to have made an extra ordinary jaymaisel.com horse photo"

Perhaps on my next visit here, you can join me. I would like for you to compose these horses exactly as you commented on. I'll just make sure I bring a lunch and plan to take a nap...cause you might be using all six of those hours (that you'd like me to wait for better lighting) just trying to get their attention. As always, your visits are entertaining, somewhat informative and definitely welcomed! Aloha.

A near cloudless day in Hana?! That's like a clear day in Princeville! What are the odds...

Great shot. Those horses remind me of fun times spent riding at the ranch there. Did you get any shots of the pools to complement this lovely shot?

Here you go John. This was just a few miles before the horses...on another trip. Guys were jumping off the bridge earlier. Crazy people that is!
