This is from my playing with a Yashica 44 TLR. What's your reaction

to the composition? All thoughts appreciated!

Yes, my wife also reacted negatively to the "squashed" composition, while I rather like the effect (which for me emphasizes the motion and the play). Glad to get other's reactions!

it's very cute:) i mean the photo too. Two things I'd note (minor both): one, and maybe that's the same as said above, his full head would make this somewhat more integer; and, on the very bottom, the white part of the toy glues the picture to the white background. Maybe ctting a thin strip off on the bottom would help against this.

The best part is the perspective, and his left hand:)

I really like the perspective and the feeling of movement it creates. I feel as if I'm in the little boy's world. The cropped composition doesn't bother me at all - rather it draws me further into the shot. The only thing I find bothersome is the brightness of the lower edge - could you burn in a bit on the bottom of the toy, just for some defintion between photo and edge of photo.

Thanks for the comments!

The brightness of the toy edge was in the original but made worse by the scan (which also, despite repeated attempts, seems to darkens up the space in the trees to his left from the print). I will repost when I've gotten reprinting done with a bit of burning and dodging.

They really do, especially when they bring out the flaws in my work!

I need to spend a bit more time with photoshop learning how to correct for when they hit the mid-tones but not the deep shadows or the highlights. Or buy a better scanner!

Sam, I like your framing. While perhaps portriat would have 'technically' improved the composition, I think it would have negated the lovely sense of movement and inclusiveness in the boy's world that you have captured. M

this is my favorite one. i mean very simply, it caught my eye first. I like the perspective. Not mentioned in the details for other readers, the photographer was very likely sitting in a section of unreplaced bricks on this particular walkway further speaking to his dedication to photography and his children. only other thing, couple people said before its too bad his full head wasnt in the shot but you might of wound up with a big grey sky since it was shot on an overcast day? i like vroom vroom vroom - charles
