Slide and Raft at Sunrise

John Crowe

Minolta Quickscan 35 scan of 35mm slide. I have replaced the original scan from 4x5 with this higher quality scan.

Very nice. But a great deal og atrifacts and dust drags it down. And the reflection in the foregroud is some disturbing. The composition is superb.

Sorry. I saw this photo on another monitor and the reflection did not look bad there.

I really like this photo. The only question I have is where is the reflection of the little wooden dock on the left? It makes me think that alot of photoshop was involved in this photo. I could be totally wrong. Good work !

Zero photoshop, except for cropping and sizing for photo.net. Admittedly this is a poor scan. You can just barely see the waterline on the left side of the raft dividing the yellow in two and you can just see the reflection line on the very corner of the raft on the right side. As you can see the water was like a sheet of glass at about 6:00 AM on a late July morning. The tripod is on the beach shore partly in the water, as was my foot! The distinct shadow line from the top right of the frame into the ladder is from the trees on the shoreline behind me. The mist was burning off quickly while I blasted off a 4x5 print, a 4x5 slide, and a half dozen 35mm slides. You can just start to see the shadow of the opposite shoreline behind the raft.

Thank-you All!

proof again that you don't need a new high tech camera to take a great photo.

Excellent.

This is very striking, but the dust and artifacts really ruin it for me. If this was sharp and clear, I'd rate much higher. Can you rescan it?

Well, for me, how the image appears is important, too. Dust, scratches, etc., DO detract, no matter how great the image looks in the thumbnail. I'm sure a lot of the photos on here would be rated far higher if one could view them in person. However, we can't, so personally speaking, a good scan is important to me. We have to judge on what we see posted and, imo, this should be the best you can do. I apologize if I've offended you - this is a very beautiful composition.

I'd love to see a cleaner scan of this shot, with it's effectively simple composition and beautiful light. I think the color does add something, so I would prefer that to a b&w rendering.

Okay, okay, okay! I will see what I can do about another scan, but this could take a few days or so! I appreciate your concerns, and I do thank-you.

While I am at it I will see what other photos I have squirrelled away. Unfortunately 98% of what I have is in transparencies.

I have scanned the uncropped contact print into my folder. The artifacting is reduced, but so is the sharpness, the water is more true to the actual image but the slide in the original posting is much closer to the actual image. I will have to try this at work next week on a newer scanner. Obviously I need a new scanner and some more knowledge of PS - isn't technology fun?!!! I will be sure to keep you posted.

I have replaced the original scan with this scan using a Minolta Quickscan 35 plus. This is from a Velvia 50 35mm slide using a 17mm lens. I have adjusted only the colours in PS to replicate the original slide.

Love this one John. Reminds me a bit of my solitude photo of a small loggers cabin on a Canadian lake. It captures the "lonelyness" but also the beauty of peace and quiet. Thanks for the tip btw on the broken wing photo. I have followed up on it and yes it does make a difference
